Some changes were made so the links and quotes cite sources written in English instead of in Portuguese, to help those who want to read more about the mentioned subjects, and also so the text makes more sense with regards to certain things such as pronouns.</em></p>
<p dir="auto">This article is meant to give in-depth answers to questions folks have about xenogender folks and identities. This post is not supposed to be succinct or give easy to digest information, exactly because that kind of content already exists and doesn’t seem to help answering everyone’s questions. If someone is looking for shorter explanations, I would refer them to either <a href="https://xenogender.crd.co" rel="noopener noreferrer">this Carrd</a> or to one of the links under <em>What does xenogender mean?</em> below.</p>
<h3 dir="auto">What does xenogender mean?</h3>
<p dir="auto"><em><strong>Translation note:</strong> I use “gender identity” to describe, roughly, “any label which could be used as an answer to a form asking for ‘a gender’; or any label describing someone’s experiences relating or not relating to the concepts of any genders themselves. I don’t just use the word “gender” because that’s exclusionary of non-monogender labels, such as <a href="https://www.deviantart.com/pride-flags/art/Genderless-1-623366953" rel="noopener noreferrer">genderless</a>, <a href="https://invernom.tumblr.com/post/80158494356/identifying-as-graygendergreygender" rel="noopener noreferrer">graygender</a>, <a href="https://beyond-mogai-pride-flags.tumblr.com/post/163845336345/pomogender-pride-flag" rel="noopener noreferrer">pomogender</a> or <a href="https://www.lgbtqia.wiki/wiki/Multigender" rel="noopener noreferrer">polygender</a>. That said, my use of “gender identity” is not meant to imply anyone’s genders aren’t real or material or whatever. Cis folks have gender identities too, the only thing is that those can also be descibed as single genders.</em></p>
<p dir="auto">There are already multiple resources defining xenogender, such as the <a href="https://nonbinary.wiki/wiki/Xenogender" rel="noopener noreferrer">Nonbinary Wiki</a> or <a href="https://www.deviantart.com/pride-flags/art/Xenogender-1-656548427" rel="noopener noreferrer">Pride-Flags</a>. Regardless, I would explain the term like this:</p>
<p dir="auto"><strong>Xenogender</strong> is an umbrella term for gender identities which can’t be described solely by using comparisons to binary genders or to other identities that can be solely defined in comparison to binary genders themselves, and instead are at least partially defined using other kinds of aesthetics, senses, feelings, concepts, objects, lifeforms and/or so on.</p>
<p dir="auto">Here are some examples of gender identities that could accurately described as xenogenders (definitions copied from the links given):</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li><strong><a href="https://www.deviantart.com/pride-flags/art/Caelgender-555850662" rel="noopener noreferrer">Caelgender</a>:</strong> a gender aesthetically associated with space (the cosmos).</li>
<li><strong><a href="https://xenoleafgenderarchive.weebly.com/leafin.html" rel="noopener noreferrer">Leafin</a>:</strong> A xenogender defined by having a connection to leaves. Some possible connections could include genders that: cannot be fully understood outside of the context of leaves; relate to leaves at any point of their seasonal cycle; are linked to leaves through neurodivergence; move the way leaves do, such as when interacting with wind; change with the seasons in a similar way that leaves do; etc.</li>
<li><strong><a href="https://queer-buccaneers.tumblr.com/post/175967302536/lykh" rel="noopener noreferrer">Lykh</a>:</strong> a xenogender characterized by supernatural vigor and a sense of disembodiment. someone who identifies as a lykh might feel like their gender exists in spite of or apart from their earthly existence. synesthetically, this gender feels undead, incorporeal and/or extradimensional, like a conspicuous absence.</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">And, even though being <a href="https://variant-archive.tumblr.com/post/182433984737/honestly-im-tired-of-there-being-no-word-for-this" rel="noopener noreferrer">xengender</a> - as in, being someone who experiences any kind of gender identity in a xenogender or xenogender-related way - is a thing, here are some examples of gender identities I wouldn’t consider part of the xenogender umbrella by default:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li><strong><a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20211027181544/https://gender-resource.tumblr.com/post/616850330266779649/a-newly-defined-family-of-genders-autonomous" rel="noopener noreferrer">Autonomique</a>, <a href="https://maveriques.tumblr.com/maverique" rel="noopener noreferrer">maverique</a> and other similarly defined genders:</strong> While the descriptions of these terms contain words such as independence, autonomy and so on, these concepts seem to be trying to describe, above anything else, an isolation from the gender binary and/or related gender identities, instead of being genders defined by such sensations/concepts. Therefore, I see these genders as explainable solely by comparisons against binary genders. A similar argument can be made regarding gender identities defined by neutrality or ambiguity.</li>
<li><strong>Gender identities affected by life experiences (i. e.: <a href="https://www.deviantart.com/pride-flags/art/Nullagender-693828444" rel="noopener noreferrer">nullagender</a>, <a href="https://archive.is/SwAQ4" rel="noopener noreferrer">integender</a>, <a href="https://nonbinary.wiki/wiki/Neurogender" rel="noopener noreferrer">neurogender</a>):</strong> Even though folks may use these terms to describe their xenogender experiences, there are also folks who use such terms to describe experiences such as having no gender for being intersex or having a weak version of a binary gender because of neurodivergence. Just as I don’t consider being genderfluid a inherently xenogender experience solely because “the identity is defined by fluidity”, I consider that, unless someone considers their life experience to be also a part of their gender identity (something that should be decided by each one of these folks on their own), there is no reason to say these labels definitely describe xenogender experiences.</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">I hope this helps understand how not all labels that can be described as uncommon, new and/or out of the gender binary are necessarily xenogenders, but also how xenogender identities are extremely diverse regardless.</p>

On the xenogender side, there are xynthvir (defined by but also separate from both masculinity and xeninity), faunagender (related to or influenced by animals), creamic (can be related to cream, creaminess or heavy cream), mavrine (related to marine/oceanic energy/life), coric (related to a “-core” aesthetic/movement) and emeraldgender (related to neutrality, but also to emeralds). The identities are represented by squares that tend to be close to genders they are related to, such as androgyne being in-between binary genders and emeraldgender being close to gender neutral even if the latter is on the other side of the chart."> </p>
<h3 dir="auto">How do xenogender identities work, since gender refers to the body parts someone feels comfortable having or feels like they should have?</h3>
<p dir="auto">So, this line of thinking is an issue. Unfortunately, many live within societies which only consider genders to be based on bodies, voices and/or so on, and that will only admit woman and man as possible gender options. They may, perhaps, express confusion if someone can toe the extremely thin line separating both of those genders within an exorsexist society, but that’s it.</p>
<p dir="auto">It is possible for someone to feel out of place if they are treated as a man. This someone may then seek hormone replacement therapy and surgeries that will make them not be seen as a man anymore. But that’s solely an external thing, something that doesn’t necessarily define this person’s gender identity. The gender society expects for each person based on their appearance isn’t necessarily descriptive of how anyone feels internally.</p>
<p dir="auto">Because gender identities, in general, are ways to define oneself regarding senses of belonging or alienation in relation to the existing gender identities and other gendered characteristics. What someone likes or dislikes on their body may be a factor that helps define someone’s gender identity, but it also may not, and this also applies to anything else that may help define someone’s gender identity.</p>
<p dir="auto">Binary genders cover many archetypes - as in mother, father, gentleman, playboy, girlboss, sorceress and so on - and senses of belonging or alienation around such archetypes are many times what defines someone’s gender identity. A sense of belonging within groups exclusive to men or to women, the language usually used to refer to one of these genders (such as pronouns and titles) and the level of comfort with socially expected gender roles are also factors that may be used to define someone’s own gender identity.</p>
<p dir="auto">The idea of gender identities being defined solely around the body someone has or wants to have is a simplification which exists mainly so cis folks can understand what being trans is in a way that fits the cissexist worldview they were taught (that gender is based on genitalia and/or secondary sexual characteristics). There are binary trans folks who don’t want to do anything/everything they can to be physically closer to what a cissexist society would expect from a body associated with their gender because they don’t feel like that’s necessary, there are nonbinary folks comfortable with “binary-looking” bodies and there are even cis folks who seek bodies that aren’t traditionally associated with their gender identities.</p>
<p dir="auto">Some women, men, and nonbinary folks may perceive their desired sexes, pronouns and titles as enough for them to claim their respective gender identities (and, again, there is nothing wrong with that). However, within nonbinary identities, archetypes tend to be particularly relevant when it comes to defining one’s identity. Some folks are both men and women; some have a specific gender and crave a well-defined place for it outside of the gender binary; some want to express neutrality regarding all genders; some don’t want to do anything to do with the concept of gender; and so on.</p>
<p dir="auto">Xenogender folks have gender identities related to archetypes which are (at least partially) separate from the gender binary, and we tend to feel a sense of belonging within such archetypes instead of those connected to binary genders. This may seem too complicated or abstract to anyone seeing gender as connected to physical characteristics, but I guarantee even many binary folks feel connected to concepts related to their genders that go beyond their bodies or using she/her or he/him pronouns.</p>
<p dir="auto">I want to make it clear that even if folks may be (and they have every right to be) both xenogender and <a href="https://www.lgbtqia.wiki/wiki/Xenogenital" rel="noopener noreferrer">xenogenital</a>, <a href="https://alt-h.net/educate/faq.php" rel="noopener noreferrer">alterhuman</a> and/or so on, xenogenders are, in general, terms using metaphors to describe how certain gender identities work or feel like, and they don’t need to be connected with what someone wants for their body or what species they identify as. Someone who is leafin doesn’t necessarily feel dysphoric for not having the body of a leaf, for instance.</p>
<p dir="auto">There is a cissexist social pressure to connect gender identities with certain kinds of bodies or specific pronouns, on top of a skewed idea (often perpetuated by trolls) of being xenogender being basically the same as being <a href="http://frameacloud.com/nonfiction/" rel="noopener noreferrer">otherkin</a> with one’s xenogender(s) being their kintype. The obligatory connection between being xenogender and wanting related pronouns or wanting to physically transition to a related body reinforces cissexism, exorsexism and gender conformity. While xenogender folks may try to present or transition according to their gender, this isn’t a necessary part of being xenogender, just like it isn’t a necessary part of any gender identity.</p>
<p dir="auto">In my experience, a lot of xenogender folks tend to align with what other trans folks want in regards to physical transition (like wanting bigger, smaller or no boobs, or wanting to take hormone blockers and/or hormones their bodies would only naturally produce in small quantities). Xenogender folks who want to express their xeninity with their own bodies (and who want, as an example, non-human characteristics) seem to be rarer, and a lot of times this desire seems to be more about their nonhumanity (or <em>also</em> about their nonhumanity) than about their gender identity on its own.</p>
<p dir="auto"><em>Xeninity is the gendered characteristic associated with one or more xenogenders, just like femininity is the gendered characteristic associated with a woman’s gender. More on that later.</em></p>
<p dir="auto">I’m not saying this to claim “most xenogender folks are just like normal trans people” or anything like that. Anyone with any kind of gender identity may want any kind of physical transition, and both xenogender folks satisfied with the bodies they got after their latest puberty and xenogender folks who would rather have scales or not have a body at all are valid. But there is discourse around nonbinary - and especially xenogender and/or <a href="https://www.lgbtqia.wiki/wiki/Pocket_Genders" rel="noopener noreferrer">pocket gender</a> - experiences acting as if having these “unusual” gender identities automatically separated us from the “usual transition experiences trans people have”, even if these are still common for many of us.</p>
<p dir="auto">The <a href="https://haunt.wtf/rook-writings/transxenine" rel="noopener noreferrer">transxenine</a> identity exists for those who want to claim having a form of identity, dysphoria, euphoria, expression, alignment and/or physical transition related to xeninity. Transxenine folks don’t need to be xenogender to be transxenine, and not all xenogender folks would consider themselves transxenine. </p>

<h3 dir="auto">Is being xenogender a choice?</h3>
<p dir="auto">It is as much of a choice as being a woman, a man, <a href="https://en.pronouns.page/terminology#agender" rel="noopener noreferrer">agender</a>, <a href="https://www.neutrois.com/neutrois-faq/" rel="noopener noreferrer">neutrois</a>, <a href="https://maveriques.tumblr.com/maverique" rel="noopener noreferrer">maverique</a> and so on. There are folks who see their gender identities as immutable and otherwise undescribable if they didn’t have these specific terms to use, folks who say they have such gender identities on their day-to-day lives even if these aren’t necessarily the most accurate wording for their actual gender identities and folks who like the concepts and want to be a part of them in such a deep, unshakeable way it’s hard to know if those identities were chosen or if they were always those folks’ real identities.</p>
<p dir="auto">Using man as an example of a gender:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Someone may say they are a man because they have always seen themself as such and can’t see their life going in any other direction (regardless of the gender they were assigned at birth).</li>
<li>Someone else may say they are a man because it’s easier to simplify their man-adjacent nonbinary identity in this way. </li>
<li>Someone else may not care about defining their gender identity and define themself as a man just so they can maintain certain privileges associated with being seen as a cis man rather than lose them by being honest about how they feel about their gender identity.</li>
<li>Someone else may find the concept of being a man interesting and try to actively mold themself around it, and from an external point of view it may be impossible to tell if that person is “really a man on the inside” or not. Someone raised since birth as a man who feels like this may feel like it’s just what is natural and expected of everyone, while someone raised since birth as a woman who feels like this will probably never open up about it since, in the present day, saying their gender was an active choice instead of an innate truth may lead others to think it’s an admission of their manhood never being real enough.</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">Obviously, there are differences between choosing to claim being a man and choosing to claim being xenogender. One of them is that there are more rigid expectations for men regarding gender expressions, bodies and behaviors. The other is that choosing to have a xenogender identity will not give anyone any kind of social advantage or way to “pass”, being an umbrella of concepts often controversial even within nonbinary spaces.</p>
<p dir="auto">Someone who believes it’s possible to be a man may still not believe that someone who dresses a certain way and/or has certain body parts can be a real man. Someone who believes it’s possible to be xenogender will likely not doubt someone’s word when they say they are xenogender, and if they doubt it will likely not be because of such concerns.</p>
<p dir="auto">However, it is also more common for someone who is xenogender to feel isolated in their identity, and to not be taken seriously within most social spaces. It is also possible that they may have to deal with harassment and hate speech even from other non-cis folks and from those who claim to be allies to trans folks.</p>
<p dir="auto">Anyway, to answer the question about if being xenogender is or isn’t a choice:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>There are folks who can only accurately describe themselves by saying they have one or more xenogenders. Therefore, their choice is between choosing to say they are xenogender, lie about it or use more vague terminology to avoid direct descriptions of their gender identities.</li>
<li>There are folks who prefer to describe their gender identities using metaphors in ways which fit terms that can be considered under the xenogender umbrella. For instance, an agender person may want to describe their genderlessness like a void and therefore choose to use the term <a href="https://www.lgbtqia.wiki/wiki/Gendervoid" rel="noopener noreferrer">gendervoid</a> to describe themself. This person can consider themself under the xenogender umbrella if they want to, even though they can also accurately describe themself in a non-xenogender way.</li>
<li>There are folks who like to describe their gender identities in ways that could be included under the xenogender umbrella. In my experience, folks who do this were usually already under the nonbinary umbrella before adopting such identities. It is also common for folks to think of it as a joke and not think of their descriptions as xenogender experiences. Descriptions like “my gender is the shrug emoji” and “I describe my gender as magenta because it’s similar yet different to pink (girl/woman)” fall into this.</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">It’s possible to say most who fit into the latter two categories are choosing to be xenogender, since they can also describe their gender identities in other ways. Even then, that doesn’t mean that their xenogender identities are not valid, that these folks are lying about about their gender identities or that all xenogender folks could just choose not to be xenogender.</p>
<h3 dir="auto">But then why not choose to just say you’re nonbinary?</h3>
<p dir="auto">Nonbinary is an useful label to describe communities/goals/etc. of those who are neither 100% men nor 100% women. However, when it comes to describe gender identities on their own, it’s a not a very descriptive label.</p>
<p dir="auto">Someone might not have a gender and say they are nonbinary. Someone else might have a wide variety of genders and say they are nonbinary. Someone else might only be able to experience life as either a man or a woman, but because they change between those genders from time to time, they may also say they are nonbinary. Someone else may be almost a woman, but not completely feel like they are one, and say they are nonbinary because of that.</p>
<p dir="auto">More specific terms are used to better identify nonbinary experiences, which is especially useful in groups with many different kinds of nonbinary folks. For instance:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Someone who is <a href="https://www.lgbtqia.wiki/wiki/Genderfluid" rel="noopener noreferrer">genderfluid</a> may want to be referred with different names and pronouns according to which gender(s) they are experiencing at the moment, if any. And while this kind of individual may have to deal with explaining how they will communicate these changes and how this isn’t about changing their mind about their identity, someone who is always neutrois might never have had to deal with that or have only been preoccupied with asserting their identity won’t change in the future.</li>
<li>Someone who is agender may be repulsed by circumstances where they need to choose or specify “their gender” even if there is some acceptance of nonbinary identity within such situations. Meanwhile, a <a href="https://askanonbinary.tumblr.com/post/139062022255/hi-there-for-a-while-now-ive-been-seeing-the" rel="noopener noreferrer">nonbinary man</a> who usually just says they’re a man and who considers being nonbinary a rarely relevant detail may not see such circumstances as stressful or even problematic.</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">What xenogender folks tend to have in common is the experience of others seeing our gender identities as “weird” or “impossible” for not being solely connected to the gender binary and/or not being solely defined by a rejection of it.</p>
<p dir="auto">However, xenogender is also more of a wide umbrella term for a group of identities which describe certain kinds of gender experiences than a specific gender identity on its own. Someone who can only describe their gender as the color red may experience their gender in a completely different way than someone who can compare their gender with a huge planet orbiting through space. Meanwhile, someone whose gender is defined as an elf-related archetype may not even be able to grasp such experiences.</p>
<p dir="auto">This is why there are so many xenogenders: often, such labels are the only way to affirm the existence of our specific gender identities instead of hiding these behind more recognizable or respected labels. It can be easier to talk about our own experiences if we have more vocabulary available than to talk about those experiences in a vacuum.</p>
<p dir="auto">Language that has to do with gender experiences outside of the woman-man binary is just beginning to be developed in many languages. Not only regarding identity labels, but also regarding how to explain how gender identities are experienced. Maybe explanations about how someone’s gender can have a certain color or size will be easier, seem less abstract and be less dependent on lesser-known terminology in the future, but I believe most of us don’t live in such a future yet.</p>
<h3 dir="auto">Still, wouldn’t it be easier to describe these gender identities in other ways?</h3>
<p dir="auto">As I said above regarding whether being xenogender is a choice or not, this depends on the situation. However, regardless of if such a choice erases an integral part of someone’s identity or not, this kind of attitude is still cissexist repression.</p>
<p dir="auto">Besides, not all xenogender folks want to assimilate into anti-xenogender spaces. Many of us prefer to be honest with regards to how we experience our gender identities.</p>
<p dir="auto">Some open themselves up about being xenogender because they consider the community around them safe or indifferent enough for that. Others want to normalize being xenogender within spaces where this kind of identity isn’t common or widely known.</p>
<p dir="auto">The fight against cissexism shouldn’t be limited to specific kinds of trans folks. Complete liberation from gender and sex norms will never be achieved while the supposed fight against them prefers to appeal to binary sensibilities over the radical inclusion of all non-cis experiences.</p>
<h3 dir="auto">And what if someone has a problematic xenogender?</h3>
<p dir="auto">Sometimes - more rarely than folks who preach against xenogenders in bad faith fearmonger about - there really is the possibility of someone having an inappropriate xenogender.</p>
<p dir="auto">Xenogenders may have to do with any existing concept, after all. So, for instance, it isn’t impossible for someone to have a gender identity related to:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Works of fiction (or otherwise) written from a bigoted/oppressive point of view;</li>
<li>Characters who commit indefensible atrocities;</li>
<li>Oppressive systems and/or their respective figureheads;</li>
<li>Offensive stereotypes;</li>
<li>Inadequate or harmful behaviors, interactions or actions;</li>
<li>Elements of cultures someone doesn’t belong to filtered through an outsider’s lens.</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">This doesn’t mean folks who have these kinds of gender identities necessarily support these things. And anyone saying their gender identity justifies violent, inappropriate or discriminatory actions is either lying (and possibly trolling) or doesn’t understand why such behavior is unacceptable.</p>
<p dir="auto">However, if someone’s goal by talking about having such gender identities isn’t to make xenogender folks seem awful, bigoted or disconnected from reality, here’s the thing: the gender identity in question is a real experience and may not change in the future. Depending on the case, here are some options that I can suggest for someone in this situation:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>At least in more public spaces, broader terms can be used (such as xenogender, genderqueer or nonbinary);</li>
<li>Using terms that are specific but which avoid problematic details may also be possible, depending on the case (for instance, <a href="https://gender.fandom.com/wiki/Lexegender" rel="noopener noreferrer">lexegender</a> instead of [word]lexic);</li>
<li>If the specific gender identity is explained for those who don’t know about it, an effort can be made to highlight how having this kind of gender identity doesn’t mean endorsing certain views, preferably using content warnings if applicable, or doing something else along those lines.</li>
</ul>
<h3 dir="auto">What do xenogenders have to do with neurodivergence?</h3>
<p dir="auto">Lots of neurodivergent folks feel alienated from the expected behaviors for binary genders and/or can’t understand binary genders enough to see themselves as having such genders. Neurodivergent folks who feel like this commonly see themselves as nonbinary and, if their gender identities can be described as sensations, feelings, concepts, species or even as their neurotypes themselves, they may also end up under the xenogender umbrella.</p>
<p dir="auto"><strong>Xenogenders are not exclusive to neurodivergent folks.</strong> The idea that “only neurodivergent folks would find use in such terminology” is rooted in ableism. Synesthesia is something that affects certain folks in ways that make them xenogender because of it (such as feeling a gender exactly like a color/taste/sound/etc.), but not all neurodivergent xenogender people are able to experience synesthesia in this way.</p>
<p dir="auto">Some neurogenders - gender identities based on being neurodivergent and which are exclusive to neurodivergent folks because of it - are also xenogenders. But not every neurogender is a xenogender (for reasons already specified earlier) and not all xenogenders are neurogenders.</p>
<p dir="auto">It is possible that one of the reasons why so many xenogender folks are neurodivergent is because it’s easier to accept oneself as having an “unacceptable” gender identity when one’s existence is already not seen as the “correct” kind of existence. For instance, if someone’s frequently not taken seriously in general and doesn’t have many friends, it might be easier for them to accept their own xenogender identity or for them to feel seen by the concept in general in comparison to someone who would lose more of their social life if they came out as xenogender.</p>
<h3 dir="auto">What pronouns do xenogender folks use? What pronouns should I use by default for someone who is [insert xenogender here]? Are xenogender pronouns a thing?</h3>
<p dir="auto">(An explanation about what pronouns are and what are their importance can be found <a href="https://en.pronouns.page/" rel="noopener noreferrer">here</a>.)</p>
<p dir="auto">Just like for anybody, especially when it comes to nonbinary folks, personal pronouns don’t need to be associated with gender. Not only that, but the use of “male pronouns”, “feminine pronouns” and so on to describe specific pronoun sets can be <a href="https://www.tumblr.com/oltiel/177348561823/ncl-pnc" rel="noopener noreferrer">exclusionary of those who don’t conform to gender norms</a> and hinder folks who use certain pronoun sets for reasons that don’t have to do with gendered connotations.</p>
<p dir="auto">So:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>There are xenogender folks who use she/her pronouns. </li>
<li>There are xenogender folks who use he/him pronouns. </li>
<li>There are xenogender folks who use both he/him and she/her pronouns. </li>
<li>There are xenogender folks who use she/her and/or he/him pronouns along with one or more other pronoun sets. </li>
<li>There are xenogender folks who use one or more pronoun sets which aren’t linked to any specific gender, such as they/them, ey/em, ne/nem, thon/thons, co/cos and so on. </li>
<li>There are xenogender folks who use any pronouns.</li>
<li>There are xenogender folks who don’t use any pronouns. </li>
<li>There are xenogender folks who use pronouns related to the subject of their xenogender identity. For instance, someone who is gendervoid may use voi/void pronouns because of it.</li>
<li>There are xenogender folks who use other pronoun sets only because they like them, because they like to be associated with them or even because they’re the pronoun sets they hate the least, even if they don’t have to do with gender neutrality or with their own gender identities.</li>
<li>There are xenogender folks who change their pronoun sets from time to time.</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">There’s a concept called xenopronouns. <a href="https://www.lgbtqia.wiki/wiki/Xenopronouns" rel="noopener noreferrer">Places talking about the term usually say</a> <a href="https://learn-neopronouns-with-me.carrd.co/#page2" rel="noopener noreferrer">these are theoretical pronouns which can’t be put into words</a>, but sometimes there are folks who use the term to refer either to neopronouns in general or to nounself pronouns (which are those pronoun sets based on nouns, such as star/stars or fae/faer). Sometimes xenopronouns are even said to be pronouns related to xenogenders because they are based on not just related nouns but also related adjectives and such.</p>
<p dir="auto">The definition stating xenopronouns are theoretical pronouns doesn’t really have to do with xenogenders on its own, even though folks who want to use xenopronouns may be xenogender and they may also want those because they are xenogender. The other definitions are a bit more associated with being xenogender, especially considering how certain xenogenders are coined with suggested pronouns or are based on certain pronouns, but these kinds of “xenopronouns” are still not exclusive to xenogender folks and may not even have to do with xeninity themselves.</p>
<p dir="auto">Maybe someone who is using kit/kits because it’s a pronoun set related to kittens instead of being related to being a man or a woman can be described as someone who is using xenine pronouns (regardless if this person has a gender related to kittens/cats/felines or not). But it would also be possible for someone to use these pronouns just because they like their sounds, not caring about the connection with kittens or with any sort of cat-related gender at all.</p>
<p dir="auto">The same thing happens with other pronoun sets. For instance, someone may use she/her because they want to associate themself to femininity, but that doesn’t mean these pronouns are universally feminine or that she/her needs to be the only pronoun set associated with femininity. Someone’s personal reason for using them may have to do with gender identity and/or expression, but labeling a pronoun set or a specific pronoun as something gendered in a specific way ignores other ways different folks may want to use the same pronouns.</p>
<p dir="auto">Maybe this isn’t so obvious within these examples, but some are murkier. What about <a href="https://www.gendercensus.com/results/2023-worldwide/#neopronouns" rel="noopener noreferrer">fae/faer</a>? How many use this pronoun because their gender has to do with fairies and how many assign other meanings to it?</p>
<p dir="auto">Or what about it/its? There are folks who reclaim this set because they are treated as subhuman, there are others who use them because they don’t consider themselves human, there are folks who use them because they consider their gender identity is outside of human understanding/normality and there are folks who just want a common gender neutral pronoun that isn’t they/them. Is it/its a xenine pronoun set? Or are fae/faer and it/its pronouns only xenine depending on context?</p>
<p dir="auto">I’m not against gender-based pronoun suggestions or against neopronoun diversity at all. But associating certain gender identities or concepts with specific pronouns or pronoun sets is limiting and not representative of everyone’s experiences.</p>
<h3 dir="auto">Are all those xenogender labels actually in use?</h3>
<p dir="auto">While there are those who seem to coin xenogenders mostly because it’s an easy activity (just decide on a concept and a name, depending on who the person is they may also generate an image with stripes in different colors or use the fill tool to change an existing flag so the new identity has a flag), a lot of xenogenders are, yes, “in use”. This is because many xenogender folks <a href="https://en.pronouns.page/terminology#polygender" rel="noopener noreferrer">have multiple genders</a>, and it isn’t hard to find folks in xenogender-friendly spaces who have lists of their own labels with dozens to hundreds of xenogenders.</p>
<p dir="auto">So, to answer the question: no, I don’t think <em>all</em> xenogender labels are used. But I believe most of them are, because there are many more folks using these terms than it may look like for someone with little to no interaction with openly xenogender folks.</p>
<p dir="auto">I imagine at least some interested in the answer to this question wish they could “cut away” certain gender identities from lists and such so they “don’t have to worry about having all those genders around to confuse/alienate questioning folks”. A warning, then: that would be futile. Even if a community list tries to cover only common and/or umbrella-like terms, there will always be someone saying they have lesser known/more specific xenogenders and that they don’t identify with any of the listed terms.</p>
<p dir="auto">That said, no one needs to remember the definitions or names of all existing gender identity labels by themself. Just don’t describe folks using terms they don’t apply to themselves and you should be okay.</p>
<p dir="auto">As someone who maintains gender identity lists (and who usually needs to translate all the definitions), I’m not a fan of folks coining gender identities only as a hobby or to provide new blog content. However, I’m aware there are infinite possibilities out there in relation to gender identities, and that as such I’ll always have to add more labels to any list I make if I want a better representation of the diversity within nonbinary and nonbinary-adjacent communities.</p>

<h3 dir="auto">What does xenic mean? Why are some genders described as xenic? Is there a difference between xenic and xenine?</h3>
<p dir="auto">Xenic was coined to define someone who is xenogender-aligned, just like lunarian was coined to define someone who is woman-aligned. Gender alignment on it’s own is a <a href="https://marlowelune.tumblr.com/post/161387008099/two-of-myriad-problems-with-using-alignment" rel="noopener noreferrer">very</a> <a href="https://wedontcareaboutyourbinary.tumblr.com/post/167698139758/the-problem-with-the-alignment-terminology-is-that" rel="noopener noreferrer">complex</a> <a href="https://wedontcareaboutyourbinary.tumblr.com/post/169860302573/what-the-fuck-do-people-mean-by-male-aligned" rel="noopener noreferrer">and</a> <a href="https://wedontcareaboutyourbinary.tumblr.com/post/169854118963/can-i-ask-why-you-think-alignment-terminology-is" rel="noopener noreferrer">often</a> <a href="https://marlowelune.tumblr.com/post/161315588484/gqsnail-wedontcareaboutyourbinary-being" rel="noopener noreferrer">misunderstood</a> <a href="https://wedontcareaboutyourbinary.tumblr.com/post/166474932165/ive-come-across-the-term-aligned-very" rel="noopener noreferrer">concept</a>, but I’ll try to give a brief overview of the subject.</p>
<p dir="auto">Some nonbinary folks started calling themselves (or, in some unfortunate instances, started <em>being called</em>) man-aligned or woman-aligned to mean a wide number of things. This may include, for instance:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Having a gender identity which is close/related to one of these genders;</li>
<li>Having similar experiences to trans men/women because of the physical changes they want to pursue, because of how they are treated when folks discover they are trans or so on;</li>
<li>Being treated as that specific binary gender in day-to-day life, with all of the expectations and/or discrimination that entails;</li>
<li>Having affinity with terminology and/or communities associated with that specific binary gender (ex.: women-only groups, MLM spaces).</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">After a while, <a href="http://temp-nb-blog.tumblr.com/post/153823153569/describing-alignment" rel="noopener noreferrer">specific terms were coined for man-aligned (solarian), woman-aligned (lunarian) and “uh, neither actually” (stellarian)</a>. These terms were still frequently misused, and in fact I’ve seen folks claiming lunarian/solarian mean an alignment to femininity/masculinity because of how the origin of these terms was explained (even though they say woman/man/female/male aligned <em>right there</em>).</p>
<p dir="auto">Anyway, a lot of other terms were then derived from them, and then other specific terms for gender alignments were developed, including <a href="https://ask-pride-color-schemes.tumblr.com/post/172672254922/uncommongenders-simplifiedalternate-xenic" rel="noopener noreferrer">xenic, which is meant to describe someone who is xeno(gender)-aligned</a>.</p>

<p dir="auto">In my experience, folks who use the xenic label are xenogender folks who incorporate xenogender-like traits in their gender expressions, desired gender transitions, pronouns and so on. They may also be xenogender folks annoyed at the idea of having to choose between being grouped with women or men, and who prefer to only be grouped with those who have similar gender identities or who face similar issues because of them. Being xenic isn’t actually defined by any of that, but those are situations that may lead someone to say they are xenic.</p>
<p dir="auto">After stellarian and related terms were coined, there was also a surge in gender identities and orientations which used those alignments as part of their definitions being coined, even though those gender alignments were meant to be broad and help with situations where the language of gender identity isn’t enough. Regardless, xenic started being included in these kinds of labels, but eventually the word just sort of started to be used as a synonym for those who didn’t want to spell out xenogender and/or didn’t know about the word xenine.</p>
<p dir="auto">Or maybe they just decided to use xenic as a catch-all instead of a more specific word that shouldn’t even make sense for communities unfamiliar with gender alignment language.</p>
<p dir="auto">What I mean is, there are groups of terms out there that defined in ways such as “for feminine folks”, “for masculine folks”, “for neutral folks” and “for xenic folks”, even if the other labels within the group weren’t using language related to gender alignment. I imagine the word coiners mean in this case is <strong>xenine</strong>, which is the characteristic originating in and associated to being xenogender in the same way masculinity is associated with manhood, but xenic is the term that often ends up being used.</p>
<p dir="auto">I’ve also seen orientations or similar terms where terms are defined by “attraction to women”/“attraction to men”/“attraction to xenic folks” when, again, the other terms are not alignments and don’t include them either. This time, the word that should have been used is xenogender.</p>
<p dir="auto">Even attraction to gender alignment on its own is controversial, since gender alignment can be used in a number of ways and it shouldn’t always have to include having to accept being considered of a similar gender identity to that alignment for the purposes of attraction. Even though discussions regarding attraction to nonbinary folks are relatively new, I still think it makes more sense for someone to claim being able to feel attraction to xenogender folks (or to folks outside of the gender binary in general) than for someone to claim being able to feel attraction to xenic folks.</p>
<p dir="auto">I imagine this was enough to understand the differences between the words xenine and xenic as well. Xenine describes something/someone with characteristics akin to being xenogender, while xenic describes being xenogender-aligned as a gender alignment. Words evolve, sure, but I don’t think they should change meanings so fast when they aren’t that widely used and the original definitions are not that hard to find.</p>
<p dir="auto">Technically, no one needs to be xenogender to be xenic nor to be xenine, but because of the stigma which comes with any association with xenogenders, it’s more common for those who describe themselves with those words to also be xenogender. It is also possible for someone to be xenogender without being either xenine or xenic.</p>
<p dir="auto">For instance:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Someone is <a href="http://ideas-of-immortality.tumblr.com/post/171064393530/genderdoux-or-gendoux-a-gender-identity-that-is" rel="noopener noreferrer">gendoux</a> and, even though e likes using pastel colors, e uses e/em pronouns, describes eir gender expression as androgynous and doesn’t make an effort to express eir xenogender identity. E doesn’t describe emself as xenine and doesn’t claim to have any sort of gender alignment.</li>
<li>Someone is <a href="https://pride-color-schemes.tumblr.com/post/161846197590/buckgender" rel="noopener noreferrer">buckgender</a> and because of this they also say they are a <a href="https://pride-color-schemes.tumblr.com/post/157136273185/nonbinary-boy" rel="noopener noreferrer">nonbinary man</a>. Even if he uses both they/them and he/him, they don’t incorporate the xenine part of their gender in the way he acts, dresses or introduces himself. They consider themself man-aligned and say it makes more sense for them to describe themself as masculine rather than xenine.</li>
</ul>
<h3 dir="auto">Final words?</h3>
<p dir="auto">These are the things I can think of that I’ve seen folks asking about with regards to being xenogender (at least when it doesn’t have to do with specific xenogenders). I may add more stuff in the future in case I see relevant questions floating around.</p>
<h3 dir="auto"><strong>Extra question number 1 (originally added May 11, 2023):</strong> Is it possible to be both xenogender and cis or binary?</h3>
<p dir="auto">It is possible to:</p>
<ol dir="auto">
<li>Have a xenogender which is connected to a binary gender (such as <a href="https://transgalaxies.tumblr.com/post/176641088060/glitravir-a-xenogender-that-is-boy-glitter" rel="noopener noreferrer">glitravir</a> or <a href="https://neopronouns.tumblr.com/post/732628441420136448/lovecoriagenboy-a-gender-related-to-lovecore-in" rel="noopener noreferrer">vaporwavigirl</a>);</li>
<li>Have a xenogender related to an archetype usually associated to/included in expectations directed at those with binary genders (such as <a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20201227030716/https://pride-library.tumblr.com/post/151668664300/dulcigender" rel="noopener noreferrer">dulcigender</a> and <a href="https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1OD9HPbK5g4lJSoD9e4x5uYGlEE3rZCDsiKEAj8kIuFQ/htmlview" rel="noopener noreferrer">amaragender</a>;</li>
<li>Have more than one gender - or a multifaceted gender identity - where the gender identity includes one or both binary genders as well as one or more xenogenders (and perhaps other genders/gender-related aspects as well).</li>
</ol>
<p dir="auto">Even if the differences between someone’s assigned gender at birth and their actual gender identity are few, their xenogender will likely not be accepted wherever they live. This person may be accused of wanting to fit into “unnecessary labels”, not have their identity taken seriously, be harassed for “believing in those made-up genders” and so on.</p>
<p dir="auto">Maybe someone whose gender identity is close to their assigned gender at birth isn’t comfortable saying they are trans. However, having to hide how they feel about their own gender identity to not be a target of isolation, ridicule and/or violence isn’t a part of the cisgender experience. If someone has this experience, they may want to say they are <a href="https://beyond-mogai-pride-flags.tumblr.com/post/174096269085/isogender-pride-flag" rel="noopener noreferrer">isogender</a>, not cis/“cisn’t” or not use any <a href="https://www.florenceashley.com/uploads/1/2/4/4/124439164/ashley_trans_is_my_gender_modality.pdf" rel="noopener noreferrer">gender modality</a> label at all. However, I don’t see the point of someone claiming cisgenderness while potentially having to deal with all this.</p>
<p dir="auto">If one is xenogender in a way they aren’t close to the gender they were assigned at birth, their gender identity might add to the exorsexism and therefore to the cissexism they have to deal with. They might even have trouble being accepted as transfeminine, transmasculine or similar if they are openly xenogender.</p>
<p dir="auto">If one has multiple genders: this is not a binary experience. If one wants to avoid the term nonbinary that’s up to them, but no <a href="https://www.deviantart.com/pride-flags/art/Genderfluid-4-874982206" rel="noopener noreferrer">genderfluid</a>, <a href="https://www.deviantart.com/pride-flags/art/Bigender-17-872989914" rel="noopener noreferrer">bigender</a>, <a href="https://www.deviantart.com/pride-flags/art/Trigender-2-873292371" rel="noopener noreferrer">trigender</a>, <a href="https://www.deviantart.com/pride-flags/art/Polygender-5-873292375" rel="noopener noreferrer">polygender</a>, <a href="https://www.deviantart.com/pride-flags/art/Polygenderflux-1-555613342" rel="noopener noreferrer">polygenderflux</a>, <a href="https://www.deviantart.com/pride-flags/art/Pangender-3-873292451" rel="noopener noreferrer">pangender</a> or similar experience is seen as acceptable within a cissexist society.</p>

Because it requires understanding jargon besides, say, accounts, posts, replies and DMs. Because it seems broken in some places. On the other hand, others say that’s just folks being stubborn and wanting the exact same experience from whatever other social media website or app they are used to. That plenty of folks who aren’t overly interested in tech were able to adapt to the software.</p>
<p dir="auto">So, how is this happening?</p>
<p dir="auto">I think something very important to take into account is how every social media software is different. Instagram has posts, which have to contain video or images, and stories. Instagram users are used to, for instance, not being able to directly post links. Twitter users had to learn what trends are, how mentions work, how threads work and how to work around problems such as harassment via full-text search or the existence of algorithms that can often hide useful/interesting posts.</p>
<p dir="auto">Every social media experience will be limited or annoying in some ways, while also having their own advantages. That said, since the fediverse is a collection of websites instead of a centralized experience, it’s also a very separate concept from what folks who “just sign up wherever everyone is” are expecting.</p>
<p dir="auto">I was always a fan of alternative social media experiences, such as Imzy, Skittlr or forums, so even though I didn’t really understand the technical side of what the fediverse or ActivityPub was when I first signed up at a Quitter instance, I didn’t care about not finding anyone specifically, because it’s not like I was expecting to find anyone I knew either. This means I experienced the website and found folks to interact with on my own pace, instead of trying to figure out how to adapt an already existing social media presence to a different platform.</p>
<p dir="auto">The impression I get regarding the problems new folks have with the fediverse is that they are mainly the fault of:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li><strong>The “come join Mastodon” branding:</strong> Media outlets and FOSS enthusiasts tend to advertise Mastodon as a single thing. And I guess that makes sense in some cases, especially when talking about the software itself, but since <a href="https://nora.codes/post/the-fediverse-is-already-dead/" rel="noopener noreferrer">the fediverse contains many different kinds of communities that don’t necessarily connect</a> and folks aren’t used to any non-email web decentralization, this confuses people, even if it’s actually the main draw for many users. New users tend to think it’s either like Reddit or like having multiple domains for the same thing, and this is <em>if</em> they can understand the communities may be connected. I’ve seen a new user at colorid.es complain they felt the need to “be segregated into a queer server”, for instance.</li>
<li><strong>Wanting to follow existing accounts without knowing their proper <a href="https://amplifi.casa/@/username@domain/" title="username@domain" rel="noopener noreferrer">@username@domain</a> address:</strong> Most social media websites have a single database, so searching for an unique name or nickname tends to be easy. However, if no one at, say, colorid.es was already interested on an account that’s at mas.to, it won’t be searchable because it isn’t on the database. It needs to be fetched.
<ul dir="auto">
<li>A similar issue is someone expecting to be able to follow celebrities, brands or influencers that don’t see the point on joining something that’s clearly some sort of alternative social media, instead of something backed by a corporation. This kind of user will likely not see the fediverse as a valuable experience, and possibly also as “doomed”/“a failure”, even though everything ends someday and most instances aren’t for-profit ventures.</li>
<li>Another connected issue is the possibility of the new user’s server not even federating with the server the person joined. I recommend joining the same server as whatever account is the most important to the new user to avoid this kind of issue. The second best thing here would be to pay attention to who defederates who, since most instances have that as public information, but then again, this might be a problem for new users who haven’t really grasped how instances work yet.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li><strong>The official phone app:</strong> While many instances have rules that expect folks to be able to post Unlisted posts, understand what the public timelines are or use instance-specific features, the official Mastodon apps, for the sake of simplicity, have several missing, renamed or hidden functions, which can complicate relations between new users and their admins.
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Furthermore, users download the app expecting it to be just like a centralized social media app, where the phone app is the default experience and the team responsible for content moderation has direct contact with the developers. This means a lot of “hey this app doesn’t have this thing, fix it” on instances that have no contact with the developers and where no staff members even use the official app.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li><strong>Lack of experience with community-first environments:</strong> Modern corporate social media tends to center on the individual. Everyone has their own account and is mostly posting only to the individuals who follow that account, or, at most, a specific subject. Moderation is rather light, because if someone is being annoying the problem is expected to be solved with blocks and mutes. However, on most fediverse software, there are public timelines, and at least the Local(/“this server”) timeline is expected to be completely compliant with the instance’s rules, which are often tailored to the needs of each community.
<ul dir="auto">
<li>A small instance might have rules against flooding the public timelines; an asexual-centered instance might have rules against any kind of sexual connotation or public display of affection being posted without a content warning; an art instance might have rules against not describing media; and so on. And while some members of marginalized communities and/or forum users might be used to these kinds of strict boundaries, folks who are used to barely having to read community guidelines don’t like this. It’s worth saying a lot of the bigger instances don’t really care about having strict rules, but even then, this attitude might hurt interactions with folks from smaller instances.</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">I think most of these problems can be mitigated if the approach is “<em>come join [instance], an alternative community for [subject]</em>” instead of trying to explain federation from the get-go, emphasizing the community has its own rules that should be read beforehand and isn’t meant to replace the same uses as corporate social media. And then, after a while, each user will see some of the accounts they come across have an extra <a href="https://amplifi.casa/@//" rel="noopener noreferrer">@</a> after their username, and federation can then be explained after the user has some idea of how it works in practice.</p>
<p dir="auto">Of course, this is mostly up to how instance admins advertise their instances, or others advertise instances they like… but, unfortunately, this means folks on the biggest instances are the ones who tend to dominate the conversation.</p>
<p dir="auto">I don’t think the Mastodon app will stop pushing for it to be the default experience, and for mastodon.social and/or .online to then be the default experience on said apps. I don’t think journalists will try to find different instances they like and make a piece on how their local communities are like instead of trying (and failing) to talk about the network as a whole. I don’t think folks worried about their Twitter account disappearing before they and their friends move to another similar website will check the full version of the rules of the first open registration instance they find on joinmastodon.org.</p>
<p dir="auto">So, basically: the answer to “is the fediverse complicated or not” is… complicated.</p>
<p dir="auto">That said, I think new users joining with fewer expectations will probably fare better than those trying to replace their corporate social media experience because they saw/heard someone say “Mastodon is just like Twitter but without fascists”.</p>

<p><em>Before starting, I'd like to note I use the term gender identity instead of gender a lot. This is not about considering gender something that is "not as serious" as other facets, but instead about covering terms such as apogender (being outside of the concept of gender) and polygender (having many genders) without calling them "genders", as they are not individual genders like juxera (a gender adjacent to woman, but separate) and ilyagender (a gender that has a tangible presence, without it being neutral, man, woman, agender, nor related to any of those or to any combination between those).</em></p>
<p><em>That said, I don't consider gender expressions, elements, alignments or modalities parts of someone's gender identity unless when people do consider those tied to their gender identities. So, for instance, I would consider that a gender non-conforming feminine trans man's gender identity is only man, unless this person considers being feminine, gender non-conforming and/or trans integral to how this person experiences gender or gender identity.</em></p>
<h2>The multitudes of gender identity</h2>
<p>Gender identity is not only expansive, but also subjective. Gender can't be defined as a set of current or desired gender roles, body parts, interests, personalities and so on. Even the narrative of (not) having gendered feelings defining one's gender identity, while more common and inclusive of more experiences than other models, doesn't cover everyone.</p>
<p>For instance, I can say that I feel and can visualize my gender as a ball of light that is also masculine and feminine. My gender dysphoria and euphoria also reinforces this when I feel my presentation should have both feminine and masculine elements, and when I feel like I shouldn't have a fixed body at all, for instance. Even so, the "gender feelings" narrative alone works out perfectly for me.</p>
<p>For others, though, I can see why that can be confusing. Some people are definitely only guided by dysphoria or euphoria with regards to pronouns, titles and body parts when defining their gender identities. Some people can't understand how having a gendered feeling is different than wanting to dress a certain way or wanting their gender to reflect their personality or tastes.</p>
<p>And, honestly, as long as these people aren't invalidating experiences like mine, that's fine. If someone says they are a nonbinary man for liking both he/him and they/them pronouns for himself and having gender dysphoria in a way he wants to wear clothes from the "male sections" and have a body that would be seen as neutral by a cissexist society, it doesn't really matter to me that this person can't understand their gender in ways that aren't recognized and encouraged under a cissexist and gender conformist logic.</p>
<p>I don't really like the whole "you don't need to understand it, you just need to respect it" thing because I feel like it often leads to people not even trying to understand how other people define their gender identities or why defending how other people define their gender identities is important. I don't want people to be like "call yourself whatever <a href="https://lgbtqia.is/@Stardust/105562897783424882" rel="noopener noreferrer">microlabels</a> you want lol", I want them to understand how gender identity can be unique, intimate, casual, simple, complicated and/or wonderful, and these are all things that get lost when labels and pronouns are the only things that get (superficially) accepted.</p>
<p>But yeah, I guess that if it's too complex to ask people to try to understand other people have different ways to tell what their gender identities are and none of them are fake, at least people should respect other's labels, titles, and pronouns. .-.</p>
<h2>When life influences gender identity</h2>
<p>Gender identities are generally influenced by life experiences: as in, most people wouldn't have genders such as woman or man or anything derived from those and from femininity/masculinity if these genders didn't exist. People who are just nonbinary without a more specific gender identity also wouldn't exist without a gender binary being imposed as the two only normal/real/good genders.</p>
<p>This is also why labels such as transgender and nonbinary (or even worse, "<a href="https://queerascat.tumblr.com/post/88961667196/maverique-kind-of-reminds-me-of-third-gender-not" rel="noopener noreferrer">third gender</a>") shouldn't be imposed on people who live in non-eurocentric societies; when a society already defines more than two genders and/or has specific identities for those who don't have a gender identity that matches the gender they were assigned at birth or childhood, they may not see a point in adopting labels that define gender identity and modality by cissexist and exorsexist eurocentric norms.</p>
<p>Anyways, when people refer to gender identities based on life experiences, they are usually not talking about any gender identity ever, but about things such as neurotype, orientation, assigned gender, kintype and so on. As in, identities that rely on things outside of gender identity to inform the gender identity, or something like that.</p>
<p>For instance, neutroix (not to be confused with neutrois) is a gender that's completely neutral because of intersexuality (being intersex). Autigender is a gender that can only be understood within the concept of being autistic. Wolandgender is a gender that has changed because of chronic pain or disability. Nullagender refers to a non-white person who is genderless because they had the white gender binary forced on them.</p>
<p>Now, these identities already receive a lot of pushback. Some think they are offensive because they don't get that these labels don't mean, say, "perisex person identifying as intersex through their gender identity"; they just see them on gender lists and think they are approppriative because they are too angry to try to understand the people behind those labels. Others think they don't make sense because gender should be something by itself, and if both trans women and cis women are women, gatekeeping other gender identities because of race/neurotype/etc. is bad. And then there are the people who claim those identities only exist because people are trolling, confused and/or have unhealthy coping mechanisms.</p>
<p>However, there are still people that accept (or "accept") those identities because they are coined and used by marginalized people. Even if they don't believe nonbinary identities are real or oppressed (yikes), they don't want to seem like they are a perisex person dunking on intersex experiences, a neurotypical person dunking on neurodivergent experiences and so on.</p>
<p>This means gender identities based on identities that aren't or aren't seen as oppressed are easier targets, both for mocking and for trolling.</p>
<h2>The versatility of condigenders</h2>
<p>Condigender is a gender identity for people whose genders change based on specific circumstances. So, for instance, someone who is a girl when alone, but genderless when around other people can say they are condigenderless or a condigirl. Or, of course, they may only say they are condigender, or that they are genderfluid (their gender changes) or genderflux (the intensity of their gender changes).</p>
<p>Condigender is usually not considered an identity dependent on life experience, presumably because even though the definition includes going through something external to experience a different gender identity, condigender can be based on any experience and not on a specific kind of identity.</p>
<p>There are many gender identities that could be considered under the condigender umbrella. For instance, an erotogender person experiences a different gender when they are in a sexual situation, and a spotlightfluid person's gender changes when they are performing.</p>
<p>I've also seen genderfluid, genderflux and demifluid (that's when a part of the gender identity doesn't change and the other does) people talking about how their gender is influenced by feelings, situations, hormones, people around them and so on, even if those people don't use the word condigender. I'm sure this is also applicable to other people who experience changes in gender identity, quantity and/or intensity.</p>
<p>Even so, people don't need to justify changes in their gender identity. Many of the "criticisms" applied to gender identities based on experiences "outside of gender" certainly apply here. Genderfluid people who can't identify patterns of gender changes certainly exist.</p>
<p>Not needing to have a reason for changes in gender identity even though people can also have reasons for changes in gender identity means anything can be a reason for someone's gender fluidity.</p>
<p>This means trolls will coin terms such as "a gender that changes depending on the color of the clothing one wears", "a gender that changes when consuming X substance" or things like that, and, well, why are these "fake genders" when others are not?</p>
<p>Actually, yeah, sometimes it's impossible to say if a term was coined by a troll or by someone who really experiences something like that. Trolls usually tell on themselves by being over the top (as in, "you need to add my gender to your gender list or you are oppressing me", "hundreds of people I know identify with this term even though this is the first time someone is talking about this gender online", "my gender is [something that has to do with really specific sexual desires or practices and ends with -sexual]" and so on), and it's possible to send an anonymous request for a term that seems plausible enough.</p>
<p>Combine this with the fact that many of the nonbinary communities that care about gender terminology are on Tumblr, where it's easy to anonimize blogs/asks and to want to do so to avoid harassment and, yeah, obviously it's very easy to troll people by coining "weird gender identities only guillible people believe in".</p>
<p>However, it's not uncommon to see people reclaiming terminology made by trolls, because, well, it's <em>there</em> and if it applies to real people, where's the harm? I agree with this sentiment; if a gender identity that's like "a gender that changes when listening to this specific band while looking at this specific color" actually fits someone's life experience, it shouldn't matter that a troll coined it.</p>
<p>This does make certain people angry, though, since they are fighting so their gender identities are respected and seen as serious by wider society; they don't want to belong to the same category as someone who adopts a label coined as a joke.</p>
<p>The thing is, adopting a "joke" as a valid gender identity doesn't make one's gender identity untrue. Maybe this person seriously has that gender experience, or maybe they don't really have that gender experience but it's close enough and they thought it would be cool or funny to use that label to spite trolls. As I said before, people can define their gender identities in different ways for different reasons; having a gender identity that is not completely serious is also something that happen within gender experiences, and that doesn't invalidate people who want HRT and surgery and/or people who really have a very specific gender experience they want other people to take seriously.</p>
<p>Instead, we should be thinking that dismissing people who use joke and/or troll genders is dismissing a valid gender experience. People can have gender dysphoria, gender euphoria, strong pronoun preferences and so on even if they use a "jokey" word to describe their gender identity, just like people who have "serious" gender identities may not experience gender dysphoria, euphoria, or strong pronoun, title or gender presentation preferences.</p>
<p>So it's not a stretch to consider that people who don't take gender seriously and don't have any stereotypical trans experiences also exist and there isn't anything wrong with them. Misleading people on purpose regarding what it means to be trans or nonbinary or universalizing a gender experience is a problem that goes beyond personal identification, and that doesn't happen only because of specific subsets of people within those groups.</p>
<h2>The versatility of xenogenders</h2>
<p>Xenogenders are kind of like genders or genderless/polygender identities that don't rely solely or at all on descriptors based on being a woman or a man, and that rely at least partially in concepts that aren't considered related to gender identities.</p>
<p>(Being xenogender, just like being nonbinary or transgender, is a label that is based on the eurocentric gender binary, and even if non-eurocentric cultures have similar concepts, the xenogender label shouldn't be forced upon them.)</p>
<p>So, for instance, melle is a label for a male gender that isn't masculine at all, and that is at least partially feminine. Melle is not a xenogender, since it only relies on being a man (which is part of the gender binary) and on being feminine (which is a concept derived from being a woman, even though it isn't the same thing as being partially a woman).</p>
<p>Cassgender and apagender are both labels that describe gender apathy, or not caring about gender. These are, again, not xenogender labels for most people, since these are concepts that can exist within comparison to binary genders. Same thing goes for gender neutral, neutrois, agender and so on; being neutral between genders or being genderless can exist within comparisons to binary genders.</p>
<p>Now, let's take a look at nyctogender: a gender consisting of darkness or related to it. This isn't a condigender that depends on the amount of light around the person. It's a label people can use when the most accurate description they can think for that gender is darkness or darkness-related. Darkness isn't a binary gender or a concept related to binary genders, so nyctogender is a xenogender.</p>
<p>Saturnian is a gender that is linked to both softer celestial feminine and masculine energy. The amount of energy within the gender can change. Femininity and masculinity are concepts related to binary genders, but celestial energy is not. This means saturnian is a xenogender.</p>
<p>Hatch's Law was a concept coined in a Discord server a few years ago. It means that for everything in existence, there can/will be a gender identity related to that concept. And it is basically true; people's gender identities can have to do with anything. People may feel their gender in a synestesic or synestesic-like way like I do, or they may feel like they want or have to explain their gender experiences in "flowery" ways.</p>
<p>So, for instance, a stargender person may not feel like they literally have the same gender a star has, but they may feel like their gender is otherwordly and hard to pin down enough to like the metaphor (just like its coiner did). Another caelgender person (caelgender is an umbrella term for space-related genders) may feel like their gender is literally a star, the void of space, or something else like that.</p>
<p>Just as it happens with condigenders, xenogenders are also coined by trolls who want to make fun of the "everything can be a gender" thing (even though they often don't even know how xenogender experiences work and usually think [noun]gender just means the person thinks they are essentially kinning that noun, which sure may be a prerequisite for using some kingender labels, but aren't what all xenogenders based on nouns are about). And, again, people may reclaim terms coined by trolls to describe their own gender identities, in ways that might be serious and that might not be so serious.</p>
<p>Honestly, I think I did see a progression happening; around 2015, people were more strict against trolls, with the main label blogs being skeptical of anon asks such as "I have a gender based on this brand". When more people on the anti-transmedicalist side of things started seeing being inclusive as a threat to the community, though, the people without exclusionist stances started accepting and spreading more questionable terms, "because why not, gatekeepers hate us anyways".</p>
<p>Having Beyond MOGAI Pride Flags (a blog that publishes any kind of label and pride flag because "everything may seem problematic to some people") around as the main hub for label coining certainly made it so newer gender identity coiners didn't shy away from coining identities based on many kinds of food, aesthetics, games, brands and so on. I don't really agree with publishing anything and everything, and I do wish people didn't coin extremely specific labels "for fun" if they don't know anyone who could use them since it hurts my job as someone who translates and spreads a lot of these terms, but, with regards to labels that aren't inherently problematic, whatever makes these coiners happy, I guess.</p>
<h2>How to dismiss trolls if everything is valid</h2>
<p>Honestly, any kind of thing that would gatekeep away trolls from having their terms accepted (such as only archiving gender identities from blogs that at least don't seem to be 100% anonymous and just for coining labels) would also affect genuine people who do want some degree of anonimity/privacy/etc. Besides, terms that may have been made by trolls are not necessarily impossible experiences, as I have already pointed out.</p>
<p>What should be dismissed are labels and behaviors that invalidate people and cause problems, such as:</p>
<ul>
<li>Terms that say anyone who is/does/experiences something has this specific gender identity;</li>
<li>Saying everyone that uses this otherwise unrelated gender identity needs to use these specific pronouns/titles;</li>
<li>Coining gender labels that have the same name and/or flags as other identities on purpose to erase the original meaning of the (non problematic) terms or flags;</li>
<li>People coining gender labels and making flags that weren't requested and are representative of groups of people the person isn't a part of (ex.: being white and making a label or a flag for an identity that is only experienced by Black people);</li>
<li>Being essentialist with regards to what a gender identity can be in a way that invalidates other experiences, regardless if the person is following transmedicalist logic or trying to justify the labels they use by trying to pretend there is no overlap or wiggle room between gender identities;</li>
<li>Acting as if any gender identity needs a flag and/or symbol, as if it needs to be archived in a specific place to be valid, and so on;</li>
<li>Coining new terms that don't fill in lexical gaps or aren't being made to make someone feel more comfortable with having a certain identity, they just want to constantly make new terminology for established concepts to confuse people and alienate others from the community on purpose (yeah, this is a thing).</li>
</ul>
<p>Gender identities can also be separated from their original reductionist or trollish contexts. For instance, if someone coins a gender identity that's like "a happy and fun gender for bunnies who are only interested in bunnies and use bun/buns pronouns" and someone who is rabbitkin is like "hey, I think I have a gender that is happy and fun and related to being a rabbit", they can use that as an inspiration for a less restrictive and "lol those kingender people are just zoophiles, also look how ridiculous xenogenders and neopronouns are" kind of gender identity. Giving it another name is also a common practice and may be a good idea.</p>
<p>Also, I'd like to point out most nonbinary people who have lesser known/accepted identities aren't fully out to a certain degree, as far as I know. Being nonbinary is heavily stigmatized, invalidated and ridiculed, and even within that it's even harder to get people to accept, say, being autigender or caelgender.</p>
<p>If anyone is worried about a <a href="https://ask-pride-color-schemes.tumblr.com/post/157738135349/various-gender-terms-with-no-known-flags-part-24" rel="noopener noreferrer">memegender</a> person not being serious enough about being trans in comparison to an agender or cassgender person, trust me, it's very likely that person doesn't say they are memegender outside of certain spaces. And this is bad! This is an example of how cissexism affects the lives of many nonbinary (and otherwise non-cis) people.</p>
<p>We should be striving for a future where anyone can be themselves, and be taken as seriously as they want to be.</p>

It’s entirely possible other people came up with separate translations/adaptations for some of the terms and concepts mentioned here. There are some examples of this that I know about, but this post is already very big and this is mostly a guide for where my translations/adaptations come from, not a complete dictionary or lexicon.</p>

<h2 dir="auto">Nonbinary identities on the anglosphere</h2>
<p dir="auto">Nonbinary people are definitely not a new thing. Even if we only take modern white eurocentric cultures into account, as in, after queer communities in these societies decided orientation and gender are separate things and women who like women are still women and men who like men are still men, there is significant evidence that people who didn’t identify as binary genders existed even before the internet.</p>
<p dir="auto">And, when internet communities became a thing, various websites were dedicated towards… well, nonbinary as an umbrella term was only coined and popularized this last decade, but there were communities and information pages out there for people outside the binary. Many of the terms used back then aren’t used in the same ways anymore - for instance, “polygendered” was an umbrella term for people with more than one gender, no gender or “their own gender” (<a href="https://web.archive.org/web/20200204005048/http://gender-sphere.0catch.com/polygenderfaq.htm" rel="noopener noreferrer">source</a>), but nowadays polygender is mostly used in the context of someone who has more than one gender, or sometimes specifically more than 3 genders (since bigender, trigender and ogligender are existing terms that cover other possibilities).</p>
<p dir="auto">But I guess back then maybe people didn’t care too much about visibility or coming out to people who might need guides to understand? Or maybe nonbinary (or not binary) lusophone people with internet access just didn’t think anyone could take their identities seriously and didn’t bother trying to explain this stuff? Maybe there was some information but it got lost and no one cared enough to back it up? Or the few not binary people out there didn’t see themselves in androgyne, bigender, genderqueer, neutrois and so on and instead only used already existing terms in Portuguese to explain their identities?</p>
<p dir="auto">Whatever the case, it doesn’t seem like any (or much) vocabulary of English origin referencing being outside of the binary ended up translated at that point in time. Transgender was translated as transgênero and then discarded by transsexual activists who were offended at the thought of getting lumped with non-transmedicalists and travestis (the term is only starting to be popularized now because of nonbinary and antitransmed activism, and even then in it’s usually in its shortened form, “trans”)… and then Tumblr happened.</p>
<p dir="auto">The popularity social justice movements got on Tumblr made it so a bunch of young people who were initially just interested in personal blogging, fandom and/or memes started to learn about anticapitalism, feminism, and other kinds of social justice activism. It was also the first space a lot of previously separate queer communities began to interact with each other; one doesn’t need to be subscribed to the genderfluid LJ community to know about issues genderfluid people face, since it might be reblogged by someone who draws cool fanart followed by that person.</p>
<p dir="auto">This led to a bunch of bad things, but also a bunch of good things. One of these things was the nonbinary community around 2013 and 2015, when lots of new gender identity terms were coined to fill the vacuum existing labels didn’t offer. Coining gender identities was seen as a good, important and/or cool thing by most non-transmedicalists as far as I remember seeing it, at least until exclusionist rhetoric was adopted by a ton of people after 2015-2017. After that, even inclusionist leaning blogs rarely dabbled into term coining or discussions, with coining labels and making flags being mostly left to a specific and unpopular corner of Tumblr.</p>
<p dir="auto">(The story goes more or less the same for orientations, I’m just focusing on gender right now.)</p>

<h2 dir="auto">Early translations of gender identities</h2>
<p dir="auto">So, I guess that explosion of terms a few years ago is when and/or why some lusophone people started translating some of this stuff. Most of the gender translations seem to have been made by Cari Rez Lobo, a pangender person who lives in Brazil and created and/or wrote significant parts of Espectometria Não-Binária (a blog) and Wiki Identidades (a wiki).</p>
<p dir="auto">Here are some of the <a href="https://identidades.wikia.org/pt-br/wiki/N%C3%A3o-binaridade_de_g%C3%AAnero" rel="noopener noreferrer">translations found at Wiki Identidades</a>:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Agender → Agênero</li>
<li>Aliagender → Aliagênero</li>
<li>Ambigender → Ambigênero</li>
<li>Androgyne → Andrógine</li>
<li>Crystagender → Cristaline</li>

<p dir="auto">Some notes regarding these:</p>

<p dir="auto">These identities are mostly translated in the most direct ways possible, to the point some terms just aren’t translated. Most of the “Xgender” terms just become “Xgênero” (gênero meaning gender).</p>
</li>
<li>
<p dir="auto">Crystagender, specifically, was adapted in a way no other identity was. Y is not a common letter in the Portuguese language - it’s only used in words borrowed from other languages - so making an adaptation makes sense, but graygênero was translated as is and andrógine just replaces the Y with I (and adds the required ´ because of grammar rules), so it’s an outlier regardless. I remember that it originated in a Tumblr post, but that was at Espectrometria Não-Binária, so it’s not like another person translated a single word; it was the same person or a person on the same staff that made this decision.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p dir="auto">Genderfluid was also an outlier: It got translated as gênero-fluido (literally: “fluid-gender”) even though other terms beginning with gender were left as is.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p dir="auto">Demiboy and demigirl weren’t adapted/translated, deminonbinary was. I can think of two reasons for that: one is that nonbinary was considered too foreign or hard to write/pronounce, while boy and girl are relatively common words people find in lusophone spaces and media because of a bunch of factors that I can shortly explain as imperialism from the USA. The other reason is kind of contradictory, and to explain it (and the remaining notes) I must first explain a bit about grammar:</p>

</ul>

<h2 dir="auto">Gendered language in Portuguese</h2>
<p dir="auto">I don’t know how easy or hard understanding this information will be for those who don’t understand any heavily gendered languages, but it’s rather relevant.</p>
<p dir="auto">In English, there are basically two kinds of gendered words: pronouns (I’m including possessive adjectives here) and titles (nouns such as aunt/uncle or girl/boy).</p>
<p dir="auto">Portuguese also has those, but it also has gendered articles and word endings.</p>
<p dir="auto">(I say gendered as in associated to gender: there are plenty of people who use she/her who aren’t women, and plenty of people who use he/him who aren’t men, for instance.)</p>
<p dir="auto">Many words that are titles in English are just the same nouns but with different word endings in Portuguese: for instance, girl is menina and boy is menino. Aunt is tia and uncle is tio. Girlfriend is namorada and boyfriend is namorado.</p>
<p dir="auto">In some instances, that’s great! It means we usually don’t need lists of gender neutral and/or nonbinary words for such common things. However, when translating words related to gender, this can become kind of tricky.</p>
<p dir="auto">The other reason I think some people might prefer using demigirl and demiboy instead of demimenina and demimenino is that, for instance, girl only means “young version of woman/the female gender”, while menina may mean “young version of anyone who uses the equivalent of she/her pronouns”.</p>
<p dir="auto">So what if someone is, say, a demigirl who uses he/him pronouns? Should that person say he’s a demimenina, even though that last letter may make people think he uses -a as an word ending, even though he probably wants to use o/ele/o as his language set (an equivalent to a pronoun set in English, with that last o being his word ending)? Or should he say he’s a demimenino, using the correct word ending but making people think he’s a demiboy instead?</p>
<p dir="auto">What I would say is that demimenina usually means demigirl and that someone can be, say, “ume demimenina” or “um demimenina” and not just “uma demimenina” (ume is an article and it means a, with the -e being changed depending on the person’s word ending, even though um is usually used instead of umo for those who use -o and it’s the version that’s formally considered correct). If the person is afraid of getting misgendered, I would recommend using demimulher (demiwoman) instead, since mulher (woman) and homem (man) are completely separate words and don’t depend on word endings.</p>
<p dir="auto">But, sure, this problem can also be avoided by using demiboy and demigirl. However, deminonbinary is translated as demi-menine, which means anyone who uses -e as a word ending (the one widely considered neutral even though there is no formal gender neutral language sets in Portuguese, think they/them if it was just a popular neopronoun set) will be communicating they are deminonbinary. Huh.</p>
<p dir="auto">Besides, transfeminine and nonbinary woman were words translated with -a as a word ending, which I believe assumes anyone who uses these identities will use the equivalent of she/her, while the same thing happens in the translations homem não-binário and transmasculino with the use of -o. Why would someone who assumes those things consider this a problem while translating demigenders?</p>
<p dir="auto">There are other inconsistencies on the translations, as I pointed out, so it’s not like it’s impossible, though.</p>
<p dir="auto">The other thing I’d like to mention is that andrógine can either mean a translation of androgyne (the gender) or a translation of androgynous (the gender quality, like feminine or masculine). My interpretation is that andrógine without a flexible word ending means androgyne, while andrógine with a flexible word ending means androgynous. Here are some examples of what I mean:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>(she/her) She’s an androgyne. → (a/ela/a) Ela é uma andrógine.</li>
<li>(she/her) She’s androgynous. → (a/ela/a) Ela é andrógina.</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">I would go on to use this “rule” for other genders: when the English word ends with the letter E, I consider it’s not a flexible word ending.</p>

<h2 dir="auto">Translating in bulk</h2>
<p dir="auto">I started Orientando.org in 2016 as something I could do with my fiancée (a website, since she’s a programmer) and that would help me have something to link to in Portuguese with information about my queer identities, and also about other queer identities so other people could do the same.</p>
<p dir="auto">Nowadays, there are over 250 terms on our <a href="https://orientando.org/listas/lista-de-generos/" rel="noopener noreferrer">list of nonbinary identities</a>. Most of the initial translating was done by me, but there was a point where I tried to make a round table discussion where future translations would be discussed. However, even though I called it months in advance, not many people answered the poll before the round table, or participated in the round table. Those who did participate were mostly chat regulars already, so I never called for another round table.</p>
<h3 dir="auto">Here are some things that I had decided when translating before the round table:</h3>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>
<p dir="auto">Non-English prefixes didn’t need to be translated, but could be adapted in case the Portuguese language wasn’t used to some letters or letter combinations. For instance:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Aporagender → Aporagênero</li>
<li>Gyaragender → Giaragênero</li>
<li>Femgender → Femigênero</li>
<li>Fissgender → Fisgênero</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>
<p dir="auto">English prefixes, when whole words, should be translated and affixed to the end, in a way that makes more sense for a Portuguese-speaking reader. For instance:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Blurgender → Gênero-borrão</li>
<li>Graygender → Gênero-cinza</li>
<li>Stargender → Gênero-estrela</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">Note: Those words are actually gramatically wrong; hyphens shouldn’t be used that way. However:</p>
<ol dir="auto">
<li>Gênero-fluido (the translation for genderfluid) uses an hyphen;</li>
<li>The hyphen makes it so it’s easier to understand these as whole words and “formal” terms, rather than just gender + a characteristic. Think about the difference between cutegender (a specific identity) and cute gender (a gender being described as cute, not necessarily cutegender and/or gendercute);</li>
<li>The hyphen also helps the reading of bigger words, since gênero-inconformista (gendermaverick) is easier to read than generoinconformista, for instance (and prefixes in Portuguese are usually not whole words);</li>
<li>Some words were allowed to retain their hyphens after the reform that made it so those hyphenated words ceased to be formal grammar, because they are “acclaimed forms”. I want to at least pretend these gender identities will continue to have hyphens for being acclaimed forms.</li>
</ol>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>
<p dir="auto">Words beginning with gender should also be translated and hyphenated. For instance:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Genderflux → Gênero-fluxo</li>
<li>Gendervague → Gênero-vago</li>
<li>Gendervoid → Gênero-vácuo</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>
<p dir="auto">Most gender identities that don’t have gender as a prefix or suffix (such as maverique, juxera and neutrois) should be left as they are. However, when they aren’t notorious enough to have a lot of people using them before the translation and they don’t look like they could be words coined in Portuguese, adaptations can and should be made.</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">One example of an adaptation is for the word I use the most for my gender, which is nonvirmina. The -a ending has the connotation of perhaps signaling an -a word ending, and the word is rather long; I rearranged the word as inavire, changing non- to in-, reducing -mina (from femina) to -na and changing the order of -na- and -vir-, while also adding an -e to the end to further enhance the point that the identity describes something away from binary genders.</p>
<p dir="auto">I tried to have nonpuella and nonpuer adapted as well (even though I find their adult counterparts nonera and nonvir compatible enough with Portuguese, the letter combinations “ll” and “np” are usually no-nos), but no one else cared when I brought that up, so I left them as is.</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Terms that are the equivalent of [adjective describing gender] [gender] should have their adjectives be coherent with the word gender (which uses o/ele/o, the equivalent of he/him in Portuguese). Otherwise, gender identities should have flexible word endings (with -e being used as neutral on lists, but people whose language sets use other endings should change -e to what they use). For instance:

<li>Agenderfluid → Agênero-fluido (instead of agênero-fluide)</li>
<li>Gender neutral → Gênero neutro (instead of gênero neutre)</li>
<li>Nullgender → Gênero-nulo (instead of gênero-nule)</li>
<li>Fluidflux → Fluxofluide (fluxo uses -o as an word ending, but I’m considering fluidflux/fluxofluide as single words and not as “fluid is being used as a characteristic of flux”)</li>
<li>Demifluid → Demifluide (even though demigenderfluid, which means the same thing, would be translated as demigênero-fluido)</li>
<li>Librandrogynous → Librandrógine</li>
</ul>

<p dir="auto">Again, I’m going to give some examples to show the difference between fixed and non fixed word endings:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>This is Araci. He uses he/him and is demigenderfluid. → Este é Araci. Ele usa o/ele/o e é demigênero-fluido.</li>
<li>This is Araci. E uses e/em and is demigenderfluid. → Est’ é Araci. El’ usa le/el’/e e é demigênero-fluido.</li>
<li>This is Araci. He uses he/him and is demifluid. → Este é Araci. Ele usa o/ele/o e é demifluido.</li>

<p dir="auto">(Of course neopronouns aren’t really 1:1 translateable, I just wanted to use some examples that didn’t use standard pronoun/language sets.)</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>The sets a/ela/a (she/her) and o/ele/o (he/him), while not mandatory for people who use those identities, are used as the default language sets for gender identities related to being a woman and being a man, respectively, especially when other language sets use the equivalent of neopronouns and weren’t being used by the vast majority of nonbinary people at the time.</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">I don’t have any concrete examples since I can’t think of anything that wasn’t already translated at the time (such as mulher não-binária e transmasculino), but I would translate something like this:</p>

<h3 dir="auto">Here are some things that were decided after the <a href="https://forum.orientando.org/thread-206-post-1337.html#pid1337" rel="noopener noreferrer">round table</a>:</h3>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Most of the rules above are ok;</li>
<li>However, terms such as melle and faesari (that don’t have gender in them) should be left as they are, or besides adapted alternatives;</li>
<li>Terms that are difficult or impossible to translate in single words can be left partially untranslated, even if they contain foreign spellings;</li>
<li>Nonbinary terms relating to binary genders or gender qualities/elements/alignments should still use e/elu/e as default, instead of a/ela/a for women/femininity or o/ele/o for men/masculinity.</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">So here are some examples of translations that were decided that day:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Astralgender → Gênero-astral</li>
<li>Faesari → Faesari or Fessari</li>
<li>Cenrell → Cenrell or Cenrel</li>
<li>Femil = Femil</li>
<li>Melle = Melle</li>
<li>Nymhs → Nímise (I think this one was decided as so good we didn’t need to also use the original? I dunno)</li>
<li>Genderkrieg → Gênero-conflito (conflict-gender) or Gênero-krieg (for those unaware, Krieg means war or wartime)</li>
<li>Rubygender → Gênero-rubi</li>
<li>Wolandgender → Gênero-Woland</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">Here are some adaptations that are a bit more complex:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Gendershift → Trocatrae</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">It was agreed that gendershift was too generic a term for something that means “a fluid gender identity that is influenced by what kind of attraction a person is experiencing at any given time”.</p>
<p dir="auto">So, to incorporate “shift” and “attraction” into a single term, trocatrae was coined, with troca meaning replacement and atra coming from atração (attraction) or atrair (to attract). The -e in the end was probably about signaling nonbinaryness and/or not wanting to use “trocatrai”, since trai could remind people of cheating (trair means to cheat, but specifically in the relationship way).</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Joltique → Repentique (sudden + -que suffix), Derrepentique (sort of like the same thing), Gênero-choque (Shock-gender) or Joltique.</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">Note that jolt has no 1:1 translation, so these were suggestions as to how the word could be more understandable. I made a <a href="https://colorid.es/@Aster/104367660894532722" rel="noopener noreferrer">poll on Mastodon</a> to see if people had a preference, and most votes went to joltique, while derrepentique had no votes.</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Starfluid → Fluidestelar</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">Oof, ok, let me start this by explaining this: usually, [prefix]fluid means [prefix]gender, but fluid. So, for instance, ceterofluid means being fluid between ceterogenders, and abimefluid means being fluid between abimegenders. There are some exceptions to this, such as demifluid (which is having a partially stable gender and a partially fluid gender) and kinfluid (when a gender changes with kinshifts). Starfluid is… kind of a middle ground between “stargender but fluid” and something different?</p>
<p dir="auto">Let’s start with stargender. Stargender was coined in january of 2014 by someone named Mars, being one of the earlier aporagender-like words. It was described as a gender that isn’t binary, neutral or androgynous, and that perhaps it’s the same gender a star would have, because such a thing is as unknown as the coiner’s gender.</p>
<p dir="auto">Mars made two relatively long posts (in comparison to most coining posts) explaining how being stargender feels, which were usually summed up as follows: stargender can describe a gender of a star, a gender beyond comprehension and that seems otherwordly and/or nonhuman because of it and/or a gender for those who don’t feel like any word that was or will be coined will fully grasp their gender identities.</p>
<p dir="auto">Starfluid, however, was coined in a different context. It was coined to be a part of a gender set with several gender identities such as these:</p>

<p>Mercurian: A nonbinary gender that is connected to a soft celestial energy. This energy can feel “gendered”, but is neither masculine nor feminine. Someone who is mercurian can also be “void” of gender itself. </p>

<p dir="auto">Starfluid was coined as follows:</p>

<p>A form of genderfluid linked to either the energy or the aesthetics of space/stars. Someone who identifies as starfluid can be fluid towards any gender as the only consistency is the tie to stellar energy/aesthetics.</p>
</blockquote>
<p dir="auto">So, it kind of fits in with these other genders linked to celestial energy, but it’s also not limited to being fluid between those genders, and it isn’t limited to being stargender but fluid either, even though it could be those things. I would say it’s more expansive than caelfluid (caelgender is an umbrella term for gender identities related to space and such), since someone can, say, be gender neutral but still have some sort of connection to space/stars.</p>
<p dir="auto">If we translated starfluid as gênero-estrela-fluido (stargenderfluid), it would seem like it’s more related to stargender than it is. If we translated it as, say, estrela-fluida (fluid-star), it might seem kind of weird, even for gender terms?</p>
<p dir="auto">Eventually, fluidestelar was suggested, which works as a separate word and looks nice. It’s kind of like “stellar fluid” but mashed into one word.</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Zodiacgenders (gêneros do zodíaco): gênero-Signo (Sign-gender)</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">Honestly, zodiacgenders are kind of weird as a set. Most of them were coined independently and they don’t have any specific theme; some of them are agingender/agender-spec identities, while others are unknown genders or genders outside of the binary or identities within the genderfluid umbrella. If their names and symbols were changed, no one would consider all of them to be part of the same set.</p>
<p dir="auto">The problem is, while some genders have prefixes I don’t mind keeping (libragender → libragênero, aquarigender → aquarigênero), some of them needed to be adapted (a friend of mine didn’t like that I used scorpigênero instead of escorpigênero, since words in Portuguese usually can’t begin with sc, and I was afraid of the day someone would request saggitariusgender or ophiuchusgender to be added to the list). Since these genders often have similar names - zodiac sign + gender - and even those that don’t are still recognizable as a shortened version of the zodiac sign + gender, I wanted to settle for something that would apply to all zodiacgenders.</p>
<p dir="auto">We settled on every zodiacgender being translated as gênero-[Signo], like, gênero-Áries, gênero-Touro, gênero-Gêmeos, gênero-Câncer and so on. Existing translations also would be kept, as in, someone who’s aquarigender/genderflow can say they are either aquarigênero or gênero-Aquário in Portuguese.</p>
<h3 dir="auto">The lack of translated vocabulary on other areas is a problem</h3>
<p dir="auto">Hatch’s Law says if anything exists, there could be a gender identity based on it. And, well, in a less meme-y sense, gender identities can be influenced by any kinds of life experiences; no one would be a woman or man if those weren’t existing constructs, and people can feel alienated by those or other constructs and build their own. This means there are gender identities based on personal beliefs, races, disabilities and so on.</p>
<p dir="auto">In my opinion, this mainly becomes a problem with gender identities based on plurality and kin, since there’s few/no vocabulary that has actually been translated/adapted about those subjects. Even people I’ve met within the lusosphere that are plural and/or kin mostly use English words, unless there’s an obvious translation for them (such as system → sistema), and even then, not always (median system → sistema median instead of sistema médio or sistema mediano or something like that).</p>
<p dir="auto">Having to use English words (because I don’t want to impose my translations to groups I’m not a part of) is annoying, since nonbinary people in Brazil are constantly policed for suspicions of being the tools of imperialist colonizers who are imposing those views on gender that supposedly shouldn’t exist in this country. Nowadays, I try to avoid using any kind of English words or expressions in public, even though they come to me naturally since I’ve spent large chunks of my life in English-speaking spaces and are well known enough to be understood by other Brazilians, so I can avoid getting that kind of “criticism” (read: hate comments and public shaming).</p>
<h3 dir="auto">When obvious translations have conflicts with other words</h3>
<p dir="auto">I made a poll on Mastodon to see what people would like to see as an adaptation of a gender identity named <a href="https://variant-archive.tumblr.com/post/179635254207/lykh" rel="noopener noreferrer">lykh</a>. The winner was laique. Sometime later, I uploaded a laique emoji, and some time after that someone questioned having a pride flag for secular people (pessoas laicas; -ca(s) turns into -que(s) when the word ending is changed from -a to -e). Oops.</p>
<p dir="auto">Again, the difference between a lykh (ume laique) and a secular person (uma pessoa laica) is that the gender identity laique will always be laique no matter what word ending the person uses, while laique as in secularism will have the end of the word changed depending on the person or the thing that is being referred to as secular.</p>
<p dir="auto">Here are some examples of other words that ended up being similar to each other:</p>

<p dir="auto">Neutric (a neutrois person who likes neutrois people) → Nêutrique (the word ending is flexible)</p>

<p dir="auto">Xenic (someone whose gender alignment is xenogender, or a specific xenogender) → Xênique (the word ending is flexible)</p>

<p dir="auto">Xenique (a xenic and autonomous gender, although I think maybe the coiner meant xenine since it would make more sense within its set) = Xenique (the word ending is not flexible)</p>

<p dir="auto">Also, if someone ends up coining something like xungender, genderfire, or something like that, that may give me a hard time (since xungênero means xumgender and gênero-fogo means firegender).</p>

<h2 dir="auto">Let’s finally talk about orientations (and juvelic terms)</h2>
<p dir="auto">The coining of orientations also began happening in bulk on Tumblr, but there was another space where it happened a lot, which is AVEN. Sure, it’s mostly a-spec orientations, kinds of orientations and related terms, but, yeah, that happened and these are important terms.</p>
<p dir="auto">AVEN has a forum in Portuguese, although I have no idea as to how they are related. Did someone just ask permission? Was it a forum regular who had extensive conversations with AVEN staff? No idea. Anyways, there were way too much people using terms such as “assexuated” in there, so I never sticked around much. However, they had a vocabulary list, where the translation work for the words themselves was usually minimal. This list was either copied from other places, or other places copied for it, since there are a bunch of ace blogs with the same vocab list. Here are some examples:</p>

<li>Burstsexual → Burstissexual</li>
<li>Demisexual → Demissexual</li>

<p dir="auto">As for kinds of orientations, romantic, platonic and aesthetic were always kind of straightforward. For instance:</p>

<li>Panaesthetic → Panestétique</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">(Note that all of those word endings are flexible, so “she’s aromantic” could be translated as “ela é arromântica” and “he’s polyaesthetic” could be translated as “ele é poliestético”.)</p>
<h3 dir="auto">Hurdle <a href="https://amplifi.casa/tag/1" title="1" rel="noopener noreferrer">#1</a>: Attraction/relationship types</h3>
<p dir="auto">Some blogs at the time I started translating mentioned alterous as is. For some reason, the blog Assexualidade Brasil (at least) uses an hyphen when describing alterous orientations, such as bi-alterous instead of bialterous.</p>
<p dir="auto">I couldn’t find anything about what is the etymology of alterous, but considering what it means (Roswell, homoalterous melle and someone who was heavily involved with coining queer terms, described alterous as a nonbinary attraction that covered anything that wasn’t fully platonic or romantic while still not other orientation kinds, including but not limited to what’s between or adjacent to platonic and romantic and completely different stuff), I decided to translate it as atração alternativa (alternative attraction).</p>
<p dir="auto">So abroalterous would become abroalternative, analterous would become analternative and so on. The -e is, again, changed depending on the person’s own word ending.</p>
<p dir="auto">Queerplatonic was usually translated as queer + platônique (as seen above), and this is what I usually use (there is no widely accepted translation for queer). People who don’t want to use queer because it’s English can use quasiplatônique instead (from quasiplatonic), but that can be annoying since quase (which sounds the same as quasi in a lot of accents) means almost, and many people may not want to say they are “almost platonic”.</p>
<p dir="auto">However, I don’t think I can accurately translate quirky with a single word, much less with something that also starts with Q. Fortunately, though, I don’t think I have ever seen complaints regarding wanting to describe this attraction without using queer or quasi. I would probably recommend using alterous (a wider umbrella term) or just platonic instead (since it’s often used that way) if someone came to me with that problem.</p>
<p dir="auto">Sensual attraction is a weird one (with regards to translation). I think people before me had translated it as sensorial and I was criticized for using sensual because “sensual means something different in Portuguese, it’s a sexually loaded word here”, even though one of its definitions in English is literally “sexually attractive”. I usually say people can describe that attraction as either sensual or sensorial, and I guess I’ll just hope that if someone coins a sensorial attraction in English with a different meaning it never gets popular.</p>
<p dir="auto">Orientations/attractions/relationships other than romantic and sexual are rarely discussed in general, so I usually don’t make a point of listing or translating every possible attraction. Here are some other terms I translated but won’t go into further detail about:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Amorplatonic → Amorplatônique</li>
<li>Variship → Varicionamento or Varirrelação (relacionamento means relationship and relação means relation)</li>
<li>Wavership → Ondulacionamento or Ondação (onda means wave)</li>
</ul>
<h3 dir="auto">Hurdle <a href="https://amplifi.casa/tag/2" title="2" rel="noopener noreferrer">#2</a>: English prefixes</h3>
<p dir="auto">Remember that gender identity thing where I usually translate [noun/adjective in English]gender as gênero-[noun/adjective in Portuguese]? That doesn’t work so well when -sexual and -romantic are only used as suffixes. Some non-English prefixes can also get weird.</p>
<p dir="auto">Three options here:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Keep English names, hope people don’t complain they are in English;</li>
<li>Adapt English names, hope people don’t complain they are ugly/weird;</li>
<li>Find and/or coin a separate alternative, hope people don’t complain the word is irrecognizable.</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">I usually try to use more than one of those options:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Gray/Grey → Gray/Grey, Cinza (Portuguese for gray) or Gris (Spanish for gray, idea by Oltiel)</li>
<li>Itheri → Íteri or Itheri</li>
<li>Klape → Clape or Klape</li>
<li>Morphe → Morfe or Morphe</li>
<li>Omni → Omni or Oni</li>
</ul>
<h3 dir="auto">Hurdle <a href="https://amplifi.casa/tag/3" title="3" rel="noopener noreferrer">#3</a>: (Usually juvelic) terms based on English words</h3>
<p dir="auto">You might have heard/seen sapphic around. It’s a term for WLW (women loving women, as in, women who are attracted to women, not necessarily in a romantic way), and it’s for women who may or may not be exclusively attracted to women, but who are attracted to women regardless.</p>
<p dir="auto">It’s a way to describe relationships between two or more women (who might not necessarily be lesbians, since women attracted to multiple genders and aren’t lesbians exist), or an attraction a woman might have for one or more other women.</p>
<p dir="auto">Because a lot of spaces were either for WLW or MLM (men loving men), nonbinary people started coining their own words involving them, and making spaces based on those words. So we have, say, enbian (nonbinary people loving nonbinary people), toric (nonbinary people loving men) and trixic (nonbinary people loving women).</p>
<p dir="auto">Toric and trixic were based on the -tor and -trix suffixes on words such as actor and dominatrix. In Portuguese, most of the words with those suffixes end in -dor and -dora, but there are remnants of words ending in -trix such as atriz (actress). So we decided to translate toric into dórique and trixic into trízique at that round table.</p>
<p dir="auto">Eventually, some nonbinary people with multiple genders decided to start coining words such as iridian (someone who is nonbinary and a woman who is attracted at least to nonbinary people and women) and opalian (someone who is nonbinary and a man who is attracted at least to nonbinary people and men). After that, a lot of terms were coined, which I’ve collected <a href="https://nbandproud.tumblr.com/search/juvelic" rel="noopener noreferrer">here</a> and that can also be seen <a href="https://starrypride.neocities.org/symbols/orientation.html" rel="noopener noreferrer">here</a>.</p>
<p dir="auto">After that, some people also started coining terms for more specific identities, such as people whose genders and/or orientations are fluid between specific states, xenogender people, agender people, bigender people and so on.</p>
<p dir="auto">So… I’ll admit I didn’t try to find what all juvelic terms are based on. However, a few of them were translated based on their base words:</p>
<ul dir="auto">
<li>Marblic → Marmórique (marble → mármore)</li>
<li>Pearlian → Peroliane (pearl → pérola)</li>
<li>Thistlian → Cardoane (thistle → cardo)</li>
<li>Wisterian → Gliciniane (wisteria → glicínia)</li>
</ul>
<p dir="auto">Both ambárique (from âmbar) and amberique are accepted translations for amberic, though.</p>

<h2 dir="auto">Other terms</h2>
<p dir="auto">AFAIK, it was Cari Rez Lobo who either translated intersex to intersexo (sexo meaning sex) or popularized it. However, I’ve seen some people within the intersex movement wanting to drift to intersex instead, since apparently all other languages also use intersex, including Spanish. This is just something that was said to me, even though ABRAI (the Brazilian Intersex Association) uses intersexo a lot publicly and I haven’t seen any push towards intersex recently.</p>
<p dir="auto">Because of this, I’ve translated altersex as altersexo, and I would translate other words ending with -sex to -sexo.</p>
<p dir="auto">With regards to the -genital words (angenital, bigenital, faunagenital, xenogenital and so on), I use them in the same way (genital is an existing word in Portuguese).</p>
<p dir="auto">Same goes for -expressive (transexpressive, interexpressive). The difference is that these words have a flexible word ending, so for someone who uses o/ele/o, we can say “ele é interexpressivo” (he’s interexpressive).</p>
<p dir="auto">Most of the non-LGBTQIAPN+ derived community names/acronyms were never translated. What I use nowadays is NHINCQ+ (não-hétero, intersexo, não-cis, queer and so on), which can be said out loud in Portuguese as nhin-que-mais. Since English doesn’t have the “nh” sound, I never bothered to try to popularize that in the anglosphere. Some people use queer. Most are still using “LGBT”, “LGBTs”, “LGBTI”, “LGBT+”, “LGBTI+” or “LGBTQIAP+”, though (when I have to, I use LGBTQIAPN+). I’ve also seen ALGBT around, which is amusing to me since I’ve lived through a-spec discourse.</p>

<h2 dir="auto">Neolanguage and language sets</h2>
<p dir="auto">I coined neolinguagem around the time I was trying on new language sets and such. It’s derived from neopronouns, but as someone reading through this can already see, language sets go way beyond that.</p>
<p dir="auto">If someone speaks or is learning to speak Portuguese and is interested in details, I’ve written about my decisions regarding language sets <a href="https://amplifi.casa/%7E/Asterismos/artigo-pronome-final-de-palavra" rel="noopener noreferrer">here</a> and stuff about neolanguage can be found <a href="https://singlel.ink/u/neolinguagem" rel="noopener noreferrer">here</a>.</p>
<p dir="auto">To simplify things, I usually ask people to say what is their article (artigo), pronoun (pronome) and word ending (final de palavra). Just like pronouns in English, there are more kinds of articles and pronouns in Portuguese than the ones that are being asked for. The word ending is also not a formal thing, since it covers a bunch of different kinds of words.</p>
<p dir="auto">I’m not a teacher so I’m not sure if this will actually help someone who doesn’t already speak Portuguese or a similar language, but here are some examples of where these words go:</p>

<p dir="auto">(People can choose whether they want to use minh[ending] with a flexible word ending or if they want to just use mi instead. They can also choose if they want to keep the original pronounciation and grammar rules, which dictate those accents in words ending with -i or -l, or if they want to maintain the default structure of those words when written and either change the strongest syllable or ignore accentuation rules.)</p>
<p dir="auto">So, in English, people usually have pronoun sets that are relatively fixed. Someone using he/they will accept either he/him/his/his/himself or they/them/their/theirs/themself(ves), someone using “she pronouns” will accept she/her/her/hers/herself and someone using e/em will likely use e/em/eir/eirs/emself.</p>
<p dir="auto">In Portuguese, a lot of people are attached to certain parts of the default or most used language set elements, but don’t want others. So even though the formal sets are a/ela/a and o/ele/o, and the most used neutral sets are ê/elu/e and e/elu/e (which is already a variation within a single set that’s otherwise untouched), plenty of people will use sets such as ê/ele/e, a/ila/a, ze/elz/e, le/elu/e, le/el/e and so on.</p>
<p dir="auto">As I already said before, there is no 1:1 translation for most pronoun/language sets. Even someone using ely/elym or eni/enis might not want to use ely or eni as pronouns in Portuguese, since neolanguage besides the goal of having a gender neutral set is so heavily stigmatized even within the nonbinary community.</p>
<p dir="auto">They/them is usually regarded as neutral, so it can be translated as whichever set the person translating is using as neutral. It/its is already more complicated; ilo was suggested since aquilo means “that thing” and isso means “this thing”, but even then, should the default neutral be used for the rest? Should we just use something that’s uncommon but not too rare?</p>
<p dir="auto">Nounself pronoun sets can more or less be adapted by spreading the word out. Fireself pronouns may be translated as, say, fo/ogo/o (fogo meaning fire). Even so, the -o ending is associated with the set that can be translated as he/him, so it’s not necessarily ideal.</p>
<p dir="auto">I can say that maybe I would translate fae/faer as af/aef/ae, ze/hir as i/éli/e and xe/xem as xe/elz/e, but these are arbitrary choices that can be chosen differently by other translators or by people who use neopronouns in both languages.</p>

<h3>"Oh no, I came to Mastodon to escape harassment/seeing bigotry but I found out my instance isn't well moderated, where should I go?"</h3>
<p>I've seen variations on question pop up multiple times, and sometimes it's a hard question to answer! Every instance has its advantages and disadvantages, and sometimes these are the same thing! For instance, some people might see a themed instance as boxing themselves while others may appreciate it's easier to find something in common with others, or some people might appreciate the family feel of small instances while others may find themselves bored because there's not much going on.</p>
<p>I'm also not omniscient, so maybe some things from this list will become outdated, or maybe I just didn't know about specific situations. If I don't know enough about one instance's policies, I'll likely not even list it, but it's possible there are people who disagree with some selections here for reasons I just didn't know about before!</p>
<p>Anyways, here are some symbols that are going to be used on the list:</p>
<p><strong>% - Pretty restrictive federation;</strong> it either means the instance is allowlist only or is constantly blocking any instance with harmful behavior. This means that you are less likely to see harmful posts, but it's also more likely you won't be able to follow or share someone/something you like sometimes, because even though there's nothing wrong with the account, they are on an instance with unreliable moderation, or that can't federate for other reasons (such as not asking to be on the instance's allowlist).</p>
<p>Keep in mind big general instances usually have worse moderation, but are also where people who are new to the Fediverse make their accounts (including, say, marginalized people coming from corporate social media because of bigotry). It's your choice if you prefer having a safer, but more restrictive experience, or an open, but riskier experience.</p>
<p>This item is mostly about not federating with instances that have relatively lenient moderation, not about not federating with actively fascist, racist, queermisic or otherwise bigoted instances. Most of the instances here block all, most or at least the biggest among those when they pop up.</p>
<p><strong>! - Instances that have strong content warning rules.</strong> This means rules for content warnings are more restrictive than putting a sensitive content filter over gore and sexual imagery. This is good for people who are or want to get used to Mastodon's widely used content warning feature, or for people who are uncomfortable or triggered by other commonly warned subjects such as alcohol use or suicide, but can be not ideal for people who want to mainly talk about commonly warned subjects, or for those with memory issues who may need to constantly check the rules before posting.</p>
<p><strong>^ - Really small instance!</strong> This instance has less than 150 accounts in total, and the amount of active members is probably a small fraction of that number. This is not a problem if you want to know everyone in your Local timeline or even if you don't want to be lost on your Federated timeline, but it may be a problem if you'll want more people to follow and aren't sure about how you'll find more people.</p>
<p><strong>+ - Big instance!</strong> This instance has had over 500 accounts active this last month. Sure, maybe a lot of those people aren't posting or just made a new account and left, but the local timeline will probably be pretty active. This can be good for those new to Mastodon who still want to know a lot of people, but can also be bad for people who just wanted a cozier instance where everyone knows each other.</p>
<p><strong>? - I don't really know much about this instance.</strong> I may have seen cool people there and the rules seem fine, but I don't have that much experience to know how often they block instances or how their rules are enforced.</p>
<p><strong>18+ only</strong> means this instance won't allow minors. There may also be a lot of lewd, kinky and/or pornographic content around, even if it needs to be properly warned for.</p>

I didn't want to overwhelm people with too many choices, so I ended up capping this list at 20. People reading this might notice I didn't recommend any instance that focuses on leftist politics in general, communism or anarchism; this is because I'm not really a fan of them, since most of them end up excusing ableism, racism and/or queermisia in name of their politics, or just don't seem well moderated.</p>
<p><strike>For instance, I haven't had any actual problem so far with kolektiva.social, but their staff isn't listed anywhere (if they actually use Mastodon) and, since their rules are basically the mastodon.social code of conduct with a few additions, I've seen a bunch of posts there containing violence, bigotry and sexually charged contents with no warnings. It's fine if you like it there and don't mind, but I'd rather be in instances where I can have, well, warnings before seeing those things. I also worry about such a big instance having open registrations with no way to contact the admins besides e-mail and a sysadmin account.</strike></p>
<p>(Wow, it's surprising how that paragraph aged poorly in, what, less than a few weeks? Apparently Kolektiva has attracted a bunch of non-leftist users with its non-moderation, and some instances are starting to block or silence it. The moderation team at Kolektiva is apparently going to try to handle that problem, but I've also seen accounts of it being unreliable and part of the problem, so I don't know what to think, and Kolektiva users probably know the situation best.)</p>
<p>That said, all of the instances on the list above wouldn't tolerate support for capitalist or authoritarian systems (as far as I know), so it's not like you can't have your political commentary/memes/calls to action on Rage.love, weirder.earth, Queer Party or Kitty.Town. It just may need to be properly warned for, depending on the post. Ecosteader and Eldritch Café are also explicitly anticapitalist, even though this is not their only focus.</p>
<p>Activists that might feel like these aren't enough may want to check out <a href="https://social.wxcafe.net/terms" rel="noopener noreferrer">Mastocafé</a>, maybe?</p>
<p>As for those who don't want to speak English: Eldritch Café does welcome people speaking all languages, as said above. People also don't mind that at <a href="https://polyglot.city/about/more" rel="noopener noreferrer">Polyglot City</a> and <a href="https://tabletop.social/about/more" rel="noopener noreferrer">Tabletop Social</a>. You might want to seek more specific help regarding your own non-English language, which I may not be able to provide.</p>
<p>There are also many other instances for specific subjects, such as <a href="https://toomanycooks.social/about/more" rel="noopener noreferrer">Too Many Cooks</a> which is for cooking or <a href="https://fandom.ink/about/more" rel="noopener noreferrer">fandom.ink</a> for fandom. Listing all of those would be a lot of work, so it might be easier to ask/look for instances about specific subjects by yourself!

In general, I would suggest not picking instances where:</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>Rules are basically copied from mastodon.social or another big project.</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>The .social rules are fine for a big general instance, but when you have a more specific target community, such as revolutionary leftists or a specific fandom or queer people, further rules are needed to ensure a better and more transparent experience. For instance, as an a-spec and m-spec xenogender person who is also intersex, I'm worried about queer spaces that only care about banning homomisia and transmisia, or that call the community LGBT, since those things are routinely used to hate on identities such as those I have.</p>
<p>Some instances I've listed just have rules like "don't be a bigot", or that are based on .social rules, but these are usually instances where I know the admins wouldn't tolerate bigotry, and that are usually populated by people who would respect the rules of other instances on this list (and that aren't newcomers to the "leftist queer furry" side of the Fediverse who might be confused about what is and isn't considered "acceptable behavior" in social justice spaces).</p>
<ul>
<li><strong>The staff is inactive or unlisted.</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>Knowing the political views of who's managing your server is important, and if registrations are open, it's important to have someone checking in those new arrivals before someone has to report them. An inactive staff also means new instances don't get suspended (or approved, if the instance is allowlist-only).</p>

<li><strong>The staff complains about other instances blocking "too many instances".</strong></li>
</ul>
<p>Federation is cool because servers connect to each other, I know, but that doesn't mean everyone should absolutely connect to every server unless something really serious is happening. Making users block servers/accounts individually means marginalized people have to deal with more stress when they are likely here because the amount of bigots that may have to be blocked on Twitter/Tumblr/Instagram/etc. is infinite and they don't want to deal with that.</p>
<p>Even if someone wants to have a good faith discussion with a centrist or whatever, they can just sign up on another server that will remain connected to that person's account. The administration doesn't <em>need</em> to let that centrist sealion dozens of marginalized users on their server because "it's the internet and people can be blocked/ignored individually". Public complaints about this usually means the administration on that server won't care about banning harmful users/instances unless maybe when they reach a absurdly high level of awfulness.

<h3>Since "how to migrate to another instance" is another common question...</h3>
<p>There isn't a way to "upload" past posts to another instance at the moment (even though you can download your posts), or to migrate your bio or pinned toots automatically. This is what most Mastodon instances have available for you to do:</p>
<ul>
<li>
<p><strong>Account redirection.</strong> This removes an account from searches and creates a "card" pointing that account towards another account, saying that the account was moved to another one. This can be done at [instance URL]/settings/migration/redirect/new.</p>
</li>
<li>
<p><strong>Following, lists, blocked accounts, muted accounts and domain block CSV downloads/uploads.</strong> You can individually get each one of those files at [instance URL]/settings/export and then upload them at [instance URL]/settings/import. The files need to be the right ones; if you upload your following list as a blocked account list, you'll block who you were trying to follow!</p>
</li>
<li>
<p><strong>Follower redirection.</strong> This will move the followers on your current account to a new account. It will also set an account redirection (see above). You'll need to make the new account first, then go to [old instance URL]/settings/migration and tell what's your new account (account@instance, like NewAccount@donphan.social), along with the old account's password, then go to [new instance URL]/settings/aliases and tell the new instance what your old account is (account@instance, such as MyFirstAccount@mastodon.online). After following the instructions, your old account will be restricted and your followers will automatically follow your new account.</p>
</li>
</ul>
<p>This process is the same when migrating to another account on the same instance (if you want to change your username but not the instance). You'll just need to make sure you are logged into the right account for each step.</p>
<p>That said, it's possible to just make another account and say you are moving there (or not say anything at all). These are all available tools, but their use isn't mandatory.

I would also like to remind everyone that people don't need to have a single account and that's it. It's possible to have a general account on Stardew City and a "lewd/afterdark" account on girlcock.club, or a French account at Eldritch Café and an English account on Chitter. Different instances have different rules, themes and languages and that's okay!</p>
<p>Having accounts on different instances is nice, since you can find out about people in local timelines that often don't get their posts shared by others on that instance. I know managing multiple accounts is not for everyone, so I highly recommend at least taking a peak at other instance's public timelines and/or profile directories while trying to find people to follow.</p>
